| | Linda Ronstadt Hummin' To Myself CD (2004)
Chante
$14.39 Successful careers that stretch over multiple decades are hardly accidents. For interpretive singers, the keys are juggling genres, selecting appropriate material, and working with compassionate collaborators. Linda Ronstadt, who scored her first hit in 1968, gets high marks in all these categories, and 2004's HUMMIN' TO MYSELF, an album of standards, is no exception. On the gentle swing of "Blue Prelude," the brassy declarations of "Never Will I Marry," and the tongue-in-cheek pathos of "Miss Otis Regrets," Ronstadt's warm, familiar alto fronts a top-shelf small jazz combo. Notable contributors along the way include tenor saxophonist David "Fathead" Newman, pianist Warren Bernhardt, and drummer Peter Erskine. Alan Broadbent's arrangements are sparkling mini-essays in thoughtful restraint--a Roy Hargrove flugelhorn solo here, a punchy blues touch there ("Get Out of Town"), as well as a lone cello or violin peeking through on occasion--giving the album its surefooted underpinning.

| | Jack Logan Little Private Angel CD (1998)
Chante
$12.95 Jack Logan and Bob Kimbell are just a couple of guys with "regular" jobs who make music in their spare time. They've received praise for their albums from small fanzines as well as Rolling Stone, yet they still keep their day jobs. Logan and Kimbell are mining territory that was once the rule, but now sadly has become the exception: well-crafted, thoughtful melodic songs that are catchy and clever but have lots of heart. For those with a sense of rock/pop history, LITTLE PRIVATE ANGEL sounds like the (fictional) unreleased album by the trio of Neil Young, Ray Davies and Paul Simon. The songs are infectious, but in a very low-key manner-on first listen they may go over one's head but on repeated listens the melodic hooks catch you for good.
This album has a refreshingly relaxed folk-like ambiance, which is a nice counterpoint to the smooth production that highlights the warm singing. Lyrically, the songs touch on materialism ("All About Money"), baseball ("Frozen Rope") and the death of a family member ("Marchin' With the Saints") in an intelligent, whimsical way. Unlike many rock or singer/songwriter albums, ANGEL feels like it's in the room with you.
Personnel: Jack Logan (vocals); Bob Kimbell (vocals, various instruments); William Tonks (guitar, dobro); Terry Rouch ...
| | Barbra Streisand Christmas Memories CD (2001)
Chante
$9.25 CHRISTMAS MEMORIES was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best
Barbra Streisand's first new holiday album in 34 years makes for a special occasion amongst her legions of fans. CHRISTMAS MEMORIES, released within two months of the World Trade Center tragedy, is definitely a soothing, inspirational remedy for troubled times. "I'll be Home for Christmas" has been recorded hundreds of times, but in the context of American troops fighting abroad, the song becomes especially poignant. Barbra does a masterful take, with a polished, orchestral arrangement. Still glowing from saying "I Do" to actor James Brolin, Streisand shines on "A Christmas Love Song."
Break out the chestnuts and eggnog as Babs warmly reminisces with vivid imagery on the Sondheim-penned "I Remember." Having recorded Gounod's "Ave Maria" on her first Christmas album, Barbra now brings that same passion to Schubert's version. Backed by a choir, the grandiose track resonates powerfully. Her voice soars to especially grand heights over a majestic arrangement on "One God," a song she first heard on a spiritual album by Johnny Mathis, and brings her unique style to the forefront on CHRISTMAS MEMORIES.
Recorded between July 19, 2001 and September 7, 2001. Includes liner notes by Jay Landers.
Traditional Pop Vocal Album.
