| | Red Holloway Coast To Coast CD (2003)
Live In Europe CD music
$12.35 Once upon a time, jazz players like saxophonist Red Holloway went out of fashion whenever their style of choice -- bop, soul jazz -- made way for the latest trend. Luckily since the 1980s, a plethora of styles co-exist, each with its own labels and venues. Coast to Coast was recorded on Milestone and finds the seasoned saxophonist in exuberant form. It doesn't hurt that he's joined by tenor Frank Wess, organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, drummer Paul Humphrey, and guitarist Melvin Sparks. The quintet wasted little time in the studio, laying down eight soulful tracks over a two-day period in February 2003. There's an easy give and take between the players, leading to lively exchanges and stirring solo work. Both Smith and Sparks give Gene Gray's "Good to Go" the feel of classic soul jazz, while Holloway's smooth lead adds icing to this musical cake. The motto for this whole affair would probably be the opener, a Holloway original titled "Still Groovin'." Holloway jumps out of the gate with a high-flying solo as if to show that ...

| | Joey Defrancesco Organic Vibes CD (2006)
Live In Europe songs
$9.59 Having reviewed some of Hammond organist Joey DeFrancesco's early albums on Columbia, then caught up with him again when he teamed up with the high-flying guitar acrobat Danny Gatton on Relentless, and then lost track of him, the word that comes to mind upon hearing this effort for Concord is "adult." DeFrancesco's earlier work was that of a young and precocious kid with a burning love of his instrument and something to prove. Fifteen years into what has become a celebrated career, he's settled in and is demonstrating the kind of taste and maturity that separates the flashy young hotshots from the serious musicians, the ones who will leave a legacy. On Organic Vibes, DeFrancesco goes beyond the traditional organ trio format that he has generally preferred up until now and is joined by a group that includes vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson and tenor sax player George Coleman, and his desire to give them the ...
| | Don Braden Workin' CD (2006)
Live In Europe album
$13.89 With a wealth of tenor saxophonists among his generation, Don Braden might get lost in a crowd when compared to those who have signed to major labels or have expensive publicity firms. But Braden has been a model of consistency as a leader over his career, including this 2005 performance recorded at Cecil's, featuring his trio with organist Kyle Koehler and drummer Cecil Brooks III. Blending elements of hard bop and soul-jazz, Braden launches the set with a driving take of "You Can't Hide Love," previously a hit for the R&B band Earth, Wind & Fire. He has equal success with another R&B ...
