| | Ultramagnetic MC's Smack My Bitch Up CD Ultramagnetic MC's Discography of CDs
Long before his tenure as the outrageous Dr. Octagon, Kool Keith was the main mic man for Ultramagnetic MC's, the short-lived, groundbreaking 1980s hip-hop outfit. In addition to being Keith's first artistic vehicle, Ultramagnetic MC's also challenged hip-hop's sonic template by being one of the first groups to mix heavy sampling with live instrumentation.
Its offensive title (and title track) notwithstanding, 1998's SMACK MY BITCH UP--the group's second post-reunion album--is a fine cross-section of Ultramagnetic MC's potent hip-hop. While not even in the same ballpark as their classic debut CRITICAL BEATDOWN, SMACK MY BITCH UP is filled with Keith's brash rapping and dense, urban soundscapes that sounded revolutionary in the '80s and still pack a mean punch decades later. Initiates should begin with CRITICAL BEATDOWN, but hip-hop collectors and fans of the self-proclaimed Black Elvis will want to pick this up.

Smack My Bitch Up music CDs
$15.79 MORTAL CITY, the follow-up to Dar Williams' successful debut, THE HONESTY ROOM, is rife with whimsy, wit, and the confessional style of songwriting that first drew fans to Williams. Her confessional style remains engaging, charming, and rarely self-indulgent. Williams tackles delicate subjects skillfully. On "As Cool as I Am," for instance, she sings about female jealousy and feelings of inadequacy in male-female relationships. Threatened by a woman who seems to have caught the attention of her lover, Williams wrestles with her own insecurity. Williams emerges victorious, ultimately declaring that she will not be afraid of women and won't allow her herself be intimidated by them.
"The Christians and the Pagans" tells of a woman's Christmastime visit to a relative's house-with her female companion. Family members are miffed (the subject and her buddy are said "pagans"), but Williams' subtle humor and keen sense of melody win the day-and propel the song. A strong second set, MORTAL CITY proves that Williams is a formidable talent who won't be disappearing anytime soon.
Recorded in Dar Williams' bedroom, Massachusetts and at Sorcerer Sound, New York, New York.

| | Subthunk You Should've Been Here Yesterday CD (2005)
Smack My Bitch Up album
$9.59 On Subthunk's third full-length, the biggest difference that fans will automatically notice is the presence of vocals. The group has indeed taken the "vocal plunge" on 2005's You Should've Been Here Yesterday, with new recruit/singer Lisa Moore joining mainstays Alex U'Ren and Antony Neely. Take bits of Portishead and Garbage, carefully combine the pieces together in a petri dish, and you'd come close to the 2005 edition of Subthunk. The part U.K., part U.S. group manages to be danceable, quirky, and even eerie at times (which probably explains why Subthunk's music could be heard in the popular TV series Six Feet Under), as evidenced by such standout tracks as the title track, "Who's in Charge?," and the speedy drum'n'bass ditty "When I Get Low I Get High." You Should've Been Here Yesterday is a pretty bold musical step for the Subthunk men and woman, especially when you compare it side by side to their previous output. And you also have to stand up and take notice whenever Devo mastermind Mark Mothersbaugh emerges from the hallowed halls of Mutato Muzika and gives his stamp of approval for a band ("The masses are asses who need Subthunk glasses," the spud-meister raves). ~ Greg Prato
We live in a world of pre-packaged, spoon-fed music, which demands we dance to the toxic beat of jingling pennies in executive pockets. subthunk was founded to lay down "anewgroovetomoveto"*. Ignoring pigeonholes and skipping merrily between genres like a band of bipedal musical llamas, subthunk ingest sonic influences, digest diverse styles, and spit out a satisfying synthesis of aural pleasure. The band has released two albums to critical acclaim (BPM, Urb, XLR8R, FutureMusic, Remix, Los Angeles Times) and the much anticipated third album "You Should've Been Here Yesterday" is scheduled for release in early 2005.subthunk's music has been heard on high profile television shows such as Six Feet Under, Las Vegas and Boston Legal leading to Ant, the band's main composer, becoming involved in scoring for films and commercials. In 2004 the band became an international project and now has members in both the U.S. and U.K. The third album "You Should've Been Here Yesterday" was primarily written and recorded in London and contains a combination of the band's British and American musical heritage, with tracks whipped around the globe thanks to DSL (the band are currently saving up for a helicopter...) The album is the first to fully explore vocals with the introduction of vocalist/lyricist Lilo and her dulcet tones and represents the next step in subthunk's musical journey. The band will be touring the U.K. in 2005 and are planning select dates in the U.S.The current line up of the band consists of guitarist/programmer Ant, ztarist (guitar-keyboard hybrid) Alex U'Ren, vocals Lilo, bass manipulator Cousin Suj and drummer Dave Logan. Of course the band's iBook as always shares the stage adding its own blend of bleeps and beats. According to the band, the iBook is a great addition as it "never gets drunk and always shows ...
