(8 Customer Reviews)
Dilated Peoples are one of the most creative and compelling underground crews in West Coast hip-hop, consistently striking a balance between laid-back grooves and intelligent street-savvy rhymes. 20/20 offers more of the same, albeit in a loose and freewheeling format. The album plays with a variety of styles and beats (some of which are provided by Alchemist), giving Evidence and Rakaa a chance to freestyle rather than stick to a script, and letting DJ Babu cut up something fierce on the turntables. While it may lack the focus of some of DP's other outings, it is still a fine example of L.A.'s underground sound, and guest spots from Talib Kweli and dancehall star Capelton help sweeten the pot.

Rolling Stone (p.66) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Rakaa and Evidence spit rhymes that get political and social without skimping on punch lines, while DJ Babu cuts up beats generous enough for hip-hop connoisseurs." $12.55 Though Wu-Tang member Inspectah Deck has only released a few albums in his ten years as a solo artist (his debut, Uncontrolled Substance, came out in 1999, though it was said to have been finished as early as 1995), what he has put out -- not to mention his various excellent guest appearances and work on Wu-Tang Forever -- has been consistently good, a trend that follows on 2006's The Resident Patient, a mixtape that plays more like an official full-length. Though he only gets a little help from his Wu compatriots (Masta Killa is featured on the opener, "Sound of the Slums," and U-God has a verse on "Handle That," while the RZA produces the excellent "A Lil Story"), Rebel INS holds his own both in his beats (on "My Style" and "Get Ya Weight Up") and in his rhymes. ...

$11.39 My parents gave me a guitar for Christmas when I was 13 or 14 and I have been fiddling with the instrument ever since. In the late 70's, an older brother took me to the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee to see an astounding guitarist by the name of Leo Kottke. Ever since seeing Leo's mastery, I have been drawn to fingerstyle guitar. At that concert, I picked up a book of Leo's compositions called 'Eight Songs'. That book collected dust on a shelf for 25 years while I attempted to figure out the instrument. It was then that I found out that the fellow that transcribed the songs for that book was a Wisconsinite! I had the privilege of two lessons with John Stropes and he encouraged me to learn Leo's song 'Ojo' from 'Eight Songs'. (I think I am getting pretty close Mr. Stropes!) After 25 years I was in the process of working on a Leo piece! I was inspired to compile a number of my original compositions and get them recorded. This CD is the result of that inspiration and work. My day job for most of my life has been as an Artist/Blacksmith. There are many parallels found with blacksmithing and playing fingerstyle guitar. One of the primary ones would have to be the endless variety of expression that is found in both endeavors. The title of the CD and the cover art are an extension of my blacksmithing work. From the CD sleeve: One of the sculptural pieces that took form at my anvil consisted of a piece of plate stock that was wrapped with a number of different scrap metal pieces that were laying about the shop. The plate with wraps was then heated up and forged under a large air hammer. The wrapping pieces were then removed revealing the finished work. The cover and CD label are close-ups of the first of this series. Being of a slightly philosophical bent, I quickly discovered many life parallels represented in this new series. It became obvious very quickly that the concept that our diverse life experiences leave a deep and lasting impression on us fit perfectly with the series of instrumentals that are presented on this CD for your enjoyment. Each of these pieces carries with it a connection to certain impressions that have been made on my life. Some deep, some light. I share them with you in the hope that they will bring encouragement, hope, and joy.Just a little bit of info from my blacksmithing bio:Steve Hackbarth is the owner of Badger Village Blacksmithing and uses traditional forging techniques to produce functional and artistic work in steel, copper, and brass. The work that he designs includes candleholders, ...
