The Fold: Daniel Castady (vocals, guitar); Keith Mochel (vocals, bass guitar); Aaron Green (guitar); Mark Rhoades (drums). The Fold are the freshly scrubbed face of emo, a completely mainstream and radio-ready pop/rock band outfitted with just enough of the signifiers of a currently salable subculture to give the quartet a hint of street cred. This Too Shall Pass is the 2006 equivalent of the pseudo-psychedelic bands MGM tried to hype into "the Bosstown Sound" in 1968, a prepackaged attempt to make Boston the next great freak city after San Francisco, or of those early-'80s hard rock bands who dressed up in new wave finery in a bid to get onto MTV. In case that sounds too harsh, it must be said that This Too Shall Pass isn't a bad record at all; indeed, it's filled with some extremely catchy tunes, particularly the soaring opener, "Gravity," and the unapologetically poppy "The Title Track," even if the album sounds entirely stage-managed and predetermined. ~ Stewart Mason The Fold are the freshly scrubbed face of emo, a completely mainstream and radio-ready pop/rock band outfitted with just enough of the signifiers of a currently salable subculture to give the quartet a hint of street cred. It's just that the album sounds entirely stage-managed and predetermined, as if the songs were written to schematics aiming for maximum "alternative" radio airplay. It all sounds completely bloodless as a result. ~ Stewart Mason This Too Shall Pass Music Fold This Too Shall Pass Songs This Too Shall Pass Review

Audio Mixer: Eric Fisher. Arriving just a year after the surprisingly eclectic and electric rock of I Break Chairs, Damien Jurado's Where Shall You Take Me? is something of a return -- but not a retreat -- to the moody minimalism of albums like Ghost of David. Songs like "Amateur Night" and "Omaha" share the acoustic strumming and rustic, shuffling rhythms of his earlier work, but also have a subtly polished confidence that brings out the warmth in Jurado's singing and ...

Recording information: Cello Studios, Los Angeles, CA (01/2001). Editor: Jay Messina. Photographer: Carla J. Cummings. Unknown Contributor Roles: John McDowell; Benjy Wertheimer. According to ancient Indian scriptures and saints, the traditional practice of chanting God's name -- be it Krishna, Rama, Ganesh, or another of the numerous deities -- is a tried and true path leading to union with the divine. Kirtan is one of the main forms of this practice, wherein a leader sings out the call and a group echoes with a response. Breath of the Heart is a live recording of Krishna Das in such a setting. Of course, being a westerner, he rounds out the sound with a little more than the customary harmonium and drum of the "motherland," adding Rob McDonald's solid electric bass, Lili Haydn's exquisite though underused violin, and Steve Gorn's mystical bansuri flute, along with various percussion and such. A single kirtan can go on for as long as the leader feels appropriate, although here Krishna Das limits the pieces to not more than 15 minutes or so.
