| | Porest Tourrorists! CD Porest Discography of CDs
It should be obvious from the 9/11-based cover art that this Californian art rocker is unafraid of giving offence. One listen to this kaleidoscopic, Negativland-like collection of sound bites, samples, and artfully constructed political satire--which includes pieces about international terrorism and the governmental response to same, the Holocaust, and the I.N.S.--will either shock and appall, or give the listener pause for reflection on the world's confusing and often perilous state.

The Wire (p.61) - "[Gergis] references Turkish psychedelic rock and infectious Iraqi pop, giving us a glimpse into the soul of the area that is often talked about, but rarely experienced -- its rich history of creating art through joy, religious ecstasy, and passionate expressivity." | | Dayna Kurtz Postcards From Downtown CD (2002)
Tourrorists! music CDs
$13.09 Clearly, downtown is where the heart of Dayna Kurtz beats. With a throaty delivery that ranges from tuneless recitation to Annie Lennox-like declamation, Kurtz sings her heartbreak epics over an intriguing combination of empathetic rhythm section and string quartet, with accordion, violin, and other bohemian touches added for spice. It's easy to imagine her on a stool in a cigarette-swirled spotlight, eyes closed, whispering "you're scared to fly, and I'm scared to land" as bluesy piano and full-bodied acoustic bass cast noir shadows over "Last Good Taste." References to stage diving on "'Miss Liberty" nod toward contemporary elements, but Kurtz's language more often evokes a timeless cabaret ambience, its fatalistic nostalgia underscored ...
| | Deadly Avenger Deep Red CD (2003)
Tourrorists! songs
$10.49 Damon Baxter, a.k.a. Deadly Avenger, has made previous contributions to the club/dance scene as a producer and remix artist, and as the force behind the Illicit label. Here he follows up a handful of single releases under his own name with a full-length debut which includes those three previously-released sides as well as ten new tracks. Baxter's love of film music is the thread that runs most consistently through Deep Red, whether it's the 47-piece orchestra cribbing melodic content from Rocky on "We Took Pelham," or the edgy Mission Impossible bongo drums that open "Punisher." Most of these compositions have an endearingly cheesy whiff of 1970s spy music about them. "In Pursuit of the Pimpmobile" is more jazz-based, with slightly creepy string parts and pervasive electric piano; "Quest Part 2" also comes across as a bit menacing, in a cool and understated sort of way, whereas "Quest Part 1" has something ...

| | Sundowners Captain Nemo CD (1968)
Tourrorists! CD music
$13.45 The Sundowners' sole album suffers from the problems afflicting many similarly obscure late-'60s pop/rock LPs on major labels. One, the group can't really decide what they want to be, which though leading to some admirable versatility, also ensures a sort of anonymity. Two, there aren't any really good songs, though one or two come close. It might be backhanded praise, but as those sort of records go, this is considerably above the average; the production's very good and full, the singing and harmonies are decent and committed, and the Sundowners play pretty well. Still, they almost sound like different groups from track to track, or at the very least like they're not quite sure whether to be all-out commercial, or try and slip some hipness in on the side. There are some engaging near-Association-strength ...
