Some would contend that THE HAWK RELAXES is largely mood music; it's made up almost entirely of ballads of a similar tempo. However, the quality of the music presented here automatically takes this recording (and all of the musicians) out of the limited realm of mood music.
These subtle renderings of songs such as "Under a Blanket of Blue," "More Than You Know," and "Speak Low" feature not only Coleman Hawkins' inimitable thick but never hard-edged sound, but also a youthful Kenny Burrell's refined approach to the electric guitar. In fact, on the entire album, Burrell performs almost in the role of a horn player. The tenor legend and the guitarist develop quite a rapport over the course of these seven tracks. Don't be fooled by this music; it may be sleepy, but it's filled with some of the most advanced ballad playing jazz has ever fostered.
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on February 28, 1961. Originally released on Moodsville (15). Includes original release liner notes by Joe Goldberg.
Personnel: Coleman Hawkins (tenor saxophone); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Ronnell Bright (piano); Ron Carter (upright bass); Andrew Cyrille (drums).

| | Freddie Hubbard Blue Spirits CD (1966) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Hawk Relaxes CD music
$8.45 This excellent 1966 set features a diverse range of ensembles, all lead by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. The first is an octet, featuring congas and a euphonium; the second, a seven-member group, including the great McCoy Tyner on piano; the third is a sextet that boasts drummer Elvin Jones and Herbie Hancock (who doubles on piano and celeste). James Spaulding lends his alto sax and flute to two of the groups, and Joe Henderson is in two as well (his melodic, yet adventurous, tenor sax playing is especially notable). Also featured are tenor player Hank Mobley, bassist Reggie Workman, pianist Harold Mabern, and drummer Pete La Roca.
The fare on BLUE SPIRITS is in keeping with the hard bop of the era. A heavy soul-jazz influence is heard on the opening "Soul Surge" and the Latin-tinged "Cunga Black," but Hubbard's work is always challenging (the driving "Jodo") and often impressionistic (the moody, spectral title track). The revolving cast of players keeps thing interesting (especially for jazz fans familiar with the respective styles of the musicians), and the tonal variation created by the different ...
| | Art Blakey A Night In Tunisia CD (1960) Bonus Tracks
Hawk Relaxes music CDs
$9.09 Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers: Art Blakey (drums); Bobby Watson (alto saxophone); David Schnitter (tenor saxophone); Valery Ponomarev (trumpet); James Williams (piano); Dennis Irwin (bass).
Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers: Art Blakey (drums); Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Lee Morgan (trumpet); Bobby Timmons (piano); Jymie Merritt (bass).
Art Blakey Quintet/The Jazz Messengers/Art Blakey/Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers: Art Blakey; Lee Morgan (trumpet); Jymie Merritt (double bass); Wayne Shorter, Bobby Timmons.
Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers met their artistic peak with the powerful A NIGHT IN TUNISIA. This incarnation of the group included Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Timmons and Jymie Merritt with their leader Blakey. As the Messengers entered their most fruitful period for Blue Note, Blakey drove his men relentlessly with powerful grooves, heavy swinging and shouts of encouragement. This session documents the full power of his assertive leadership ...
| | Bobby Hutcherson Oblique CD (1967) Remastered
Hawk Relaxes songs
$8.45 Bobby Hutcherson's second quartet session, Oblique, shares both pianist Herbie Hancock and drummer Joe Chambers with his first, Happenings (bassist Albert Stinson is a newcomer). However, the approach is somewhat different this time around. For starters, there's less emphasis on Hutcherson originals; he contributes only three of the six pieces, with one from Hancock and two from the typically free-thinking Chambers. And compared to the relatively simple compositions and reflective soloing on Happenings, Oblique is often more complex in its post-bop style and more emotionally direct (despite what the title may suggest). The latter is especially true on the two opening Hutcherson pieces, the sweetly lilting "'Til Then" and the innocent, childlike theme of "My Joy," which is reminiscent of "Little B's Poem" (save for its multi-sectioned structure). Meanwhile, Chambers' experiments with counterpoint in the context of group improvisation keep ...
| | Stanley Turrentine That's Where It's At CD (1962) Bonus Track; Remastered
Hawk Relaxes album
$8.99 A Blue Note release with Les McCann on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Otis Finch on drums. Small group format. Excellent (and exciting) soul-jazz session with Turrentine blowing hot. ~ Ron Wynn & Michael Erlewine
This 1962 session places tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine in the company of pianist Les McCann, bassist Herbie Lewis, and drummer Otis Finch. Of the six cuts on the original release, McCann, who was already in serious soul-jazz territory, wrote four. His meaty three- and four-chord figures are prominently placed and, as always, his sense of time and swing are everywhere. "Smile, Stacey" kicks it off in full blowing fare with Turrentine walking the line between soul-jazz and hard bop like a tightrope. His earthy tone is particularly muscular and quick here. His own blues ballad, "Soft Pedal Blues," follows, with Turrentine doing his best Ben Webster with slow, smoky breathy tones and McCann trilling across the top on the turnarounds. The slippery soul-blues of "Pia" is a shimmering little groover by McCann with him singing along with the lines in his solo. On his "We'll See Yaw'll After While, Ya Heah," ...
| | Hank Mobley Workout Edition: RVG Series CD (1961) Bonus Track; Remastered
Hawk Relaxes CD music
$8.99 Recorded on March 26, 1961. Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather and Michael Cuscuna.
WORKOUT teams tenorman Hank Mobley with guitarist Grant Green for a rousing session that befits the title. Also in attendance are rhythm section aces Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, who provide swinging support. Muscular tunes like the title track and the aptly titled "Smokin'" are the focus here as the two expertly blow and wail through the changes like frenzied boxers in a title bout. Also included are Mobley's catchy blues number ...
