This three-tracks disc is essentially a CD-single for the song "Grass" by the Brooklyn-based noise-folk outfit Animal Collective, a tune featured on the group's 2005 album FEELS. The song, which careens from breezy insouciance to explosive, shout-filled mayhem, is just as thrilling here as it is on the band's full-length, but the real treasures are the disc's two b-sides.
"Must Be Treeman" and "Fickle Cycle" perfectly fuse the Collective's acid- tinged noise-collage aesthetic with their back-to-the-bush child-savant primitivism. Even better is the bonus DVD, which contains videos for "Grass" and SUNG TONG's "Who Could Win A Rabbit?" as well as behind-the-scenes footage and a multi-media art piece.
Animal Collective's single for one of the major tracks from 2005's Feels adds a pair of intriguing B-sides, plus a bonus DVD featuring videos of "Grass" and "Who Could Win a Rabbit?," footage from a recording session, and a music/video collage created by Gang Gang Dance's Brian DeGraw. ~ John Bush
This set includes a CD of 2 exclusive tracks plus their single. The DVD includes 2 exclusive videos/film, plus videos. Animal Collective Grass Songs Grass Review

| | Animal Collective Sung Tongs CD (2004)
Grass CD music
$13.15 From the goofy, fluttering phrasing of "Who Could Win a Rabbit" to the lilting harmonies in "College" (which could easily be an outtake from the Beach Boys' PET SOUNDS), Animal Collective oozes with a starry-eyed, back-to-childhood sensibility. But like anyone's youth, SUNG TONGS is full of monsters and things that go bump in the night. The ominous backwards voices in "Visiting ...
| | Bloc Party Silent Alarm CD (2005)
Grass music CDs
$10.79 On this immensely appealing debut, SILENT ALARM, the London-based quartet Bloc Party fulfills the promise of their barnstorming 2004 singles "Banquet" and "She's Hearing Voices." Led by magnetic frontman Kele Okereke, the band extracts the most fascinating aspects of the previous 25 years of British indie rock and fuses them into a new entity--complete with smarts and heart--never delving into retro-kitsch or slavish imitation.
Okerere's urgent yelp most often recalls a fired-up incarnation of the Cure's Robert Smith, but the sounds the group creates echo everything from Gang of Four's staccato militarism ("Banquet") to the reverberating guitars of the Chameleons ("Price of Gas"). At times, Bloc Party also recalls the ecstatic soundwashes of early-1990s cult pioneers like Ride ("Plans") and Slowdive ("Compliments"). Lyrically, Okerere tilts toward an endearing adolescent pessimism that, even when the music is less than mopey, gives him away as a goth at heart ("and the ravens are leaving ...
| | Portugal The Man Waiter: You Vultures! CD (2006)
Grass songs
$9.89 Illustrator: John Baldwin Gourley.
Waiter: "You Vultures!" is an album decidedly of its time. Its pretentious title, punctuated as if ripped from a screenplay, should give most listeners an idea of what to expect. The album sees Portugal. The Man suffering or benefiting from an identity crisis. They seem unable to determine if they want to be a fractured art rock ensemble à la Blonde Redhead and Shudder to Think, a dance-oriented electro-indie act like Tahiti 80 and Phoenix, or a progressive-minded mood merchant like the Notwist. Along the way, piano ballads and screaming rants intersect, as the band rocks and stumbles like an uneasy mix of the aforementioned bands, crafting frequently catchy songs. John Baldwin Gourley offers mostly pleasant 1970s dance vocals. When Portugal. The Man stick to mellow post-rock, it's somewhat smooth sailing, but they tend to take themselves too seriously. ~ Tim DiGravina

| | Appleseed Cast Peregrine CD (2006) Digipak
Grass album
$10.09 The Appleseed Cast has a sound that you might have a hard time categorizing until you hear someone use the phrase "Midwest post-rock." Then it becomes obvious that that's exactly what they sound like, even if the term itself is really kind of baffling. You have to hear it to understand: the Appleseed Cast's sound is often noisy, but is never just noise; they experiment with weird and unusual production approaches, but you wouldn't call ...

| | Joanie Pallatto King And I CD (2000)
Grass CD music
$12.95 Despite the joint billing with Joanie Pallatto -- who contributes mightily to this album -- this is venerable jazzman King Fleming's show. Venerable is perhaps an understatement, as his first recorded session was in December 1945, where he appeared as a sideman alongside Wynonie "Blues" Harris with Johnny Alston & His All Stars. On his second album for Chicago's Southport label, not only is Fleming singular piano artistry on display, but ten of the 14 items on the playlist are his original compositions. Joined on this set by vocalist, record company executive, and lyricist -- she provides the words for five of Fleming's tunes -- Joanie Pallatto, these two pros work together comfortably and confidential. The coolness of Pallatto's voice and the melodic crispness of the Fleming's piano seems to have been preordained for each other. Add as adornments some of Chicago's finest performers and the result is jazz at the highest level. The musical agenda is a varied one befitting Fleming's long and varied experience as a musician. He likes to work with exotic themes like those woven into "Overt" and "Opportunity for Love." The former is strictly instrumental and is the stage for the languid soprano sax of Rich Fudoli. The latter features Fudoli's haunting flute which, along withPallatto's wordless vocalizing, contriving a variety of jungle sounds. On Fleming's "Bypass," the piano and Clifford Griffin's bass are joined by Pallatto simulating ...
| | Screeching Weasel Kill The Musicians CD (1995)
Grass music CDs
$9.25 A pretty handy release that covers all the unreleased and hard to find material from this influential Ramones-esque pop-punk band. But considering that a majority of these tracks were recorded between 1989 through 1995 at various studios, the sound quality and style blatantly vary. For example, the first several tracks of Kill the Musicians ...
