FROM THE CLIFFS is the ambitious debut EP from motley British quartet Guillemots. Blending catchy pop tunes with audio-verite realism, the band achieves that rare balance of songwriting craft and odd, yet thoroughly charming experimentation. Fyfe Dangerfield's endearingly honest, whisper-to-a-wail vocal performance provides a perfect foil for the music. Jauntily skipping from lounge jazz one minute, to breezy 1960s pop the next, Guillemots have penned a Technicolor dream of a record.
Guillemots: McLord Magrao (guitar); Aristazabal Hawkes (double bass); Rican Caol (drums); Fyfe Dangerfield.

From The Cliffs album
$12.05 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' year-end lists, ...
| | Bloc Party Silent Alarm CD (2005)
From The Cliffs CD music
$10.79 On this immensely appealing debut, SILENT ALARM, the London-based quartet Bloc Party fulfills the promise of their barnstorming 2004 singles "Banquet" and "She's Hearing Voices." Led by magnetic frontman Kele Okereke, the band extracts the most fascinating aspects of the previous 25 years of British indie rock and fuses them into a new entity--complete with smarts and heart--never delving into retro-kitsch or slavish imitation.
Okerere's urgent yelp most often recalls a fired-up incarnation of the Cure's Robert Smith, but the sounds the group creates echo everything from Gang of Four's staccato militarism ("Banquet") to the reverberating guitars of the Chameleons ("Price of Gas"). At times, Bloc Party also recalls the ecstatic soundwashes of early-1990s cult pioneers like Ride ("Plans") and Slowdive ("Compliments"). Lyrically, Okerere tilts toward an endearing adolescent pessimism that, even when the music is less than mopey, gives him away as a goth at heart ("and the ravens are leaving the tower/make your peace"). However, at the end of "Price of Gas," when he proclaims "I can tell you ...
| | New Pornographers Twin Cinema CD (2005)
From The Cliffs music CDs
$10.15 The follow-up to indie-rock collective New Pornographers' lauded ELECTRIC VERSION, 2005's TWIN CINEMA expands on that album's power-pop sound. Here the group, masterminded by singer/multi-instrumentalist A.C. Newman, has added a new member--vocalist/pianist Kathryn Calder (Newman's niece)--while both the songwriting and arrangements have become more adventurous.
The energetic title track sounds like an unlikely collaboration between Wire and Big Star, while "The Bones of an Idol" recalls mid-1970s Brian Eno. As always, alt-country star Neko Case steals the show, particularly on "These Are the Fables," an urgent, piano-based tune that spotlights her potent Patsy Cline-on-caffeine vocals. Destroyer's Dan Bejar also contributes a handful of songs, including the quirky T. Rex-meets-New Wave track "Broken Beads." The New Pornographers have enough talent and imagination to weave their various influences into their own unique sound, and the result is a buoyant, engaging ...
| | Destroyer's Rubies CD (2006)
From The Cliffs songs
$12.19 There are enough reasons for some listeners to dismiss Destroyer (aka Dan Bejar) right off--his self-consciously literate lyrics, his precious sense of theatricality, and his shameless David Bowie obsession, to name a few. Yet Bejar makes all of these potential liabilities work in his favor by building smart, absorbing, and remarkably well-crafted pop songs that sink in and then stick.
DESTROYER'S RUBIES, the artist's fifth solo album, is his most accomplished to date, and though it still owes a deep debt ...

| | Billy Joel Ultimate Collection CD (2001) (Import) Australia
From The Cliffs music CDs
$23.65 Billy Joel's ULTIMATE COLLECTION features the piano man on 36 tracks, highlighted by "New York State of Mind," "She's Always a Woman," and "Allentown."
Forget for a moment that this double-disc, 36-track collection isn't presented in strict chronological order -- it does roughly divide into two parts, with the pre- Innocent Man material largely taking up disc one and the post-Innocent Man selections on disc two (yes, there are some exceptions to the rule, but it generally follows this rule). Forget that there are some singles, radio hits, and ...
