Back with a relatively rapid follow-up to his debut, Charanga Cakewalk (actually Michael Ramos) takes a different tack. Bringing in a number of different vocalists (Lila Downs, Patty Griffin and Ruben Ramos), he goes for a much more rootsy feel in the music, one that's more about songs than instrumentals this time around. The contrast between this and the first disc works well. They don't so much complement each other as offer a progression, the feeling that Ramos has fully learned how to integrate the ideas that made his debut so good into a wider canvas. There are touches of many styles, from danceable norteño to son, along with the more abstract touches, like the title track. With Chicano Zen, Ramos fulfills the promise he made on his first album, and looks set to really become a major Latin artist of imagination and technique. ~ Chris Nickson

| | Elvis Crespo Urbano CD (2002)
Chicano Zen album
$5.69 URBANO was nominated for the 2003 Latin Grammy Award for Best Merengue Album. "Bandida" was nominated for the 2003 Latin Grammy Award for Best Tropical Song.
With his each one of his three previous records reaching number one on Billboard's salsa chart, Elvis Crespo certainly had set a high standard of success for his 2002 release, Urbano. Leaving his pretty-boy look and youthful vocal approach behind him, Crespo both looks and sounds like an artist who has come into his own. Like fellow Puerto Rican artists Olga Tañón and Joseph Fonseca, Crespo has chosen the merengue rhythms native to the D.R. as his musical backdrop. The beefy, four-on-the-floor feel, filled out by the traditional horns and piano montuno is embellished by the urban influence hinted at in the title. Distorted rock guitar and electronic elements straight from the club add the extra dirt and funk necessary to set Crespo ahead of the pack. Where in some cases these elements would be unwelcome party crashers, they're used effectively by producer/musical director Roberto Cora. Crespo's vocal performances throughout are earnest and mature. His melodic sense and spare use of ornamentation make for a very digestible album. Elvis Crespo, like Tañón, is an artist who performs merengue, not a merengue artist. Urbano does honor to his successful past, and also offers promise for his bright future. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez

| | Yumuri Tiene Bilongo CD (2002)
Chicano Zen CD music
$13.49 There are few soneros out there who can claim the same level of pedigree that produced Yumuri. Born Moisés Valle, alongside brothers Orlando (Maraca) and Luis, one can only imagine how musical that house must have been. He met the salsa world head on in 1984 when he joined the very popular Elio Revé Orquesta (which, incidentally, gave him the name Yumuri), affording him the opportunity to share the stage with such vocal greats as Cheo Feliciano, Rubén Blades, Ismael Miranda, and Tito Nieves. Known especially for his amazing range, comfort in the upper registers, and improvisational ability, it was not long before Yumuri split from Revé to pursue a solo career, backed by his famous brothers. Though his 2002 release Tiene Bilongo does not feature both of the other fabulous Valles (Maraca does appear on the record), there's plenty of talent to go around. The record draws from Cuba's next-generation players, and was recorded for the island's premier record label, Ahi Nama. Yumuri still maintains a strong fan base in Cuba and around the world, and it's no surprise, after hearing his clear-as-a-bell voice ...
