After 40 years, a number of ill-conceived posthumous albums, and countless bootlegs, one would almost have to be skeptical of a new album billed as "12 previously unreleased studio recordings -- almost 60 minutes of unheard Jimi Hendrix!" The good news is that Valleys of Neptune largely delivers on that promise. Even hardcore collectors will likely be surprised at how much of this album they haven't heard. But much of this material has been available before in some form, official and otherwise. Although there were tons of posthumous overdubs, elements of these very versions of "Stone Free" and "Hear My Train Comin'" were used as building blocks for the versions on Crash Landing and Midnight Lightning, respectively. Singer-Songwriter Yola grew up in a small town outside of Lublin, Poland. She started singing and performing publicly at age 13 in the school choir, and during high school played many concerts and festivals, winning several vocal contests. Yola joined a music group called "Medic" where she was lead vocalist, and also played with an instrumental group from the private music school, playing guitar.While continuing her studies, Yola received great classical training by touring with one of the most prestigious choirs in Poland, Academic Choir KUL. With this ensemble Yola got her first experience recording for TV and radio. After graduating from both the Catholic University of Lublin (psychology) and the Maria Curie University in Lublin (department of fine arts), with a desire to further her education in music and to follow her passion to sing, Yola came to the United States. In New York City she trained in R & B, studying privately with Dee Jackson, background singer with Patti LaBelle. Yola also took classes with Judy Hages, an instructor specializing in the style of Broadway musicals, and studied with writer Bell Chevigny, to help compose lyrics in English. Yola co-wrote with Romuald Lipko (from the group Budka Sufler) a few songs that were recorded by singer Michael Hochman. One of these songs reached the number one position in reported airplay for three weeks in Canada. She also sang the title song for an independent Asian/American film called "Destiny," directed by Louis Zalu. While continuing to sing with local bands in the New York area, performing at clubs, festivals, and charity events, Yola found employment in TV and Radio, acting as journalist for public TV's WNYE, as well as becoming a popular radio host on WRKL (New York) and WLIM (Long Island). Her three-hour afternoon show is heard Monday through Friday. Due to the exposure from being heard in eight states, as well as on the Internet, Yola has developed a large following, fans who appreciate her unusually open personality and daring style. Yola's talent and burning desire to sing caught the attention of musician and producer Ted Nash (saxophonist with Wynton Marsalis), who came aboard to produce Yola's CD, "Another Girl." Christa Dulude has a deep respect for the songwriters and singers of the Jazz/Tin Pan Alley era and it comes through on this CD. With a voice uniquely her own and a great band, she delivers these songs with an authentic early jazz era sound. The album swings lightly and delves into well known standards, little known classics and a few songs you're not likely to hear unless you were around in the 1920's, 30's and 40's, or you've inherited a record collection from your older uncle or you've found it on a 78 record in a dusty old antique shop! This album has a couple of big band tunes, a cover of Billie Holiday's first recorded song (My Mother's son-in-law), a cover of Anita O'Day's "The Party's Over", a Cole Porter tune, the obscure "Oceans of time" that was originally performed by Al Bowlly and the Ray Noble Orchestra, an original jazz ballad from the piano player on the album, Ted Myers, the Lena Horne cover "My Blue Heaven" to name a few. Christa and her band cover a wide variety of music from the Jazz/Tin Pan Alley era including movie songs, big band tunes, jazz ballads, swing, early European dance band songs and anything else they can find from that era. This CD has a good variety of those different types of music. This album was recorded and produced on Cape Cod where Christa and her band primarily perform. The wonderful musicians on the CD are from all over New England and some of them actually played with the big bands.
