In 2005, ESP combined Sun Ra's notorious Heliocentric Worlds, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 onto a single disc. Then, oddly enough, they re-released it with a different catalog number and cover art in 2006. Given ESP's convoluted release history, you might think this is just another repackaging of the same album -- and it is, except for an easily overlooked detail. The 2005 release reads "Digitally remastered from the original tapes by Conor Murphy" and the 2006 release credits Douglas McGregor with "Digital Restoration." So it's the same music (originally recorded by Richard Alderson), but with a new remastering that does make a difference to attentive ears. The overall sound is just a bit crisper, and the stereo field for Volume 1 has been switched from the 2005 version to that of the 2006 version. The stereo fields for Volume 2 are the same for both versions, but the opposite of the 1998 Get Back version. The stereo field may not matter much (don't say that to a purist), but the remastering really allows for more detail to come through, especially with Ronnie Boykins' arco bass and all the extraneous percussion. These are landmark sessions to be sure, made at the height of Ra's free-est phase in the '60s. As such, they're not for the timid and are in sharp contrast with the band's earlier Chicago sound. But they still stand as major works in the Ra canon, and this new version, Heliocentric Worlds, Vols. 1-2 allows listeners the best opportunity to really hear what Sun Ra's vision was for these albums. ~ Sean Westergaard

| | George Benson Greatest Hits Of All CD (2003) Remastered
Heliocentric Worlds Volumes 1 & 2 CD music
$10.19 Recorded between 1976 & 1998. Includes liner notes by Don Heckman.
Basically, this "greatest hits of all" is simply that: the highest-charting tracks in George Benson's long career -- highest-charting pop and adult contemporary tracks, that is. Benson had been on the scene over a decade before signing with Warner Bros., and many of his jukebox and R&B hits were recorded for Creed Taylor's CTI label. Some of Benson's recorded work that held those hits has been reissued in the past two years. Of the Warner material, they have gauged success by chart placement -- not sales, not radio play, not artist choice. Therefore, while ...
| | Madeleine Peyroux Careless Love CD (2004)
Heliocentric Worlds Volumes 1 & 2 music CDs
$14.49 Madeleine Peyroux's unique blend of jazz and pop was first unveiled on 1996's DREAMLAND, where she sounded like a postmodern heir to the smoky-voiced tradition that ran down from Billie Holiday through the likes of Karen Dalton and Judy Roderick. Though Peyroux made a splash with her debut, she quickly dropped out of the music scene, not to appear again until eight years later with the long-overdue follow-up, CARELESS LOVE.
Here, Peyroux tackles material from a ...
| | Miles Davis Sketches Of Spain CD (1960) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Heliocentric Worlds Volumes 1 & 2 songs
$6.75 The crown jewel of the epic Evans/Davis triptych that began with MILES AHEAD and PORGY AND BESS, SKETCHES OF SPAIN is as emotionally compelling as any performance in the trumpeter's remarkable body of works. Combining as it does the emotional gravity of two cultures--the deep song of flamenco music and the rich lament of the blues--SKETCHES OF SPAIN is a musical hybrid of enormous power and beauty. Gil Evans' immense canvas of orchestral colors inspires some of Davis' most deeply felt solo flights. He paints vast vistas of velvety, shimmering night sounds, and through it all runs the mountainous backbone of Spain's native rhythms and chants.
The centerpiece of SKETCHES OF SPAIN is the Evans/Davis treatment of the second movement of Rodrigo's "Concierto De Aranjuez." Evans' charts ...
