Trombonist Ryan Haines' second Sea Breeze CD is a swinging big band session, full of potent originals and tight ensembles. The leader is the featured soloist in the catchy Latin-flavored "New Horizons," with a seemingly endless fountain of ideas. The swinging saxes and muted brass in "Swing Open" suggest the influence of Woody Herman's bands of the late '40s, as does the peppy "Pan-Fried Doodles." "Without You (For Matthew)" has a melancholy theme and driving rhythm, backed by his richly textured brass and reed arrangements. Haines' playful "A Problem with the Sun" has inspired trumpet solos by Tim Leahey and Rich Sigler, with a slight Mexican slant to the rhythm section. Haines' "Goodnight Story" is a warm ballad feature for his mellow trombone, which almost seems to be serenading a child to sleep. The one piece not written by the leader is the old chestnut "America the Beautiful," with a lush introduction and a contemporary rhythm behind tenor saxophonist Tedd Baker's solo.
