5 stars Deep Soul of Men
The Group brought everything with them, Style, elegance, grace, and songs that "men" released the love and sacrifice for family and love out in the open. "Travelin' Man is the most beautiful song ever written. The harmonization, and rich tones are outstanding. I wish we were still listening to that sincere kind of talent today.

Donnie Elbert's initial run as a solo artist happened in the late '50s with a series of singles recorded for the King subsidiary Deluxe. All of those sides are collected here, including his one chart hit, the soul-squeezing falsetto masterpiece "What Can I Do." Elbert spent the next decade as a soul gypsy traveling from small label to even smaller label for a single or two before moving on to the next (don't worry, he eventually found a home in the '70s with All Platinum). Added to the Deluxe label catalog here are several sides recorded for the Gateway label in 1964, including a nice ballad, "Who's It Gonna Be," and three pleasingly danceable Motown sound-alikes, "Lily Lou," "Do Whatcha Wanna," and "Run Little Girl." There's also an outtake version of "I Want to Be Loved But Only By You" with the title truncated to "I Want to Be Loved" and an unaccredited outtake from the Deluxe sessions that first appeared on a mid-'70s ...

Misleading title aside, MASTER HITS is actually the long-overdue CD version of Green's 1967 debut album, featuring "Back Up Train," the ballad that was his first successful single (as a member of the Soulmates). The album, of course, pre-dates Green's move to producer Willie Mitchell's Hi Records, and the long string of hits that resulted from that collaboration. In fact, there are few hints here of what you'd consider the Al Green style--he sounds like a capable (if somewhat faceless) ...

Columbia's 1998 collection of Earth, Wind & Fire's Greatest Hits in many ways stands as the group's definitive compilation. Even though there have been more extensive overviews of the group's work, such as the triple-disc set The Eternal Dance, this is the first collection to contain all of the group's biggest hits on one disc. All but one ("Love Music") of the ten songs from 1978's The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire are included, while six of the ten songs from The Best Of, Vol. 2 are featured; the remaining two cuts on the 17-track collection are the minor early single "Kalimba Story" and the album cut "Gratitude." These are fine additions to the album, but the true meat of the collection lies in the hits -- "Shining Star," "That's the Way of the World," "Sing a Song," "Getaway," "Got to Get You Into My Life," "September," "Boogie Wonderland," "After the Love Has Gone," "Let's Groove," and so many others.
