Recorded in 1972 but not properly released until 2006, Diana Ross's BLUE was originally conceived as an addendum to the former Supreme's starring role as Billie Holiday in the film LADY SINGS THE BLUES. While the soundtrack to the film found Ross delivering pop-centric versions of Holiday's songs, BLUE offers a jazzier take on the material, providing a more appropriate tribute to Holiday's legacy.
Jazz purists may still bristle at the notion of anyone filling Lady Day's shoes, but taken on her own merits Ross delivers some fine performances. The soul singer sounds confident and at ease on Holiday chestnuts like "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes" and "He's Funny That Way," and her vocals are bolstered by some fine backing musicians and top-notch arrangements by the likes of Oliver Nelson and Benny Golson. Reputedly shelved by Motown founder Berry Gordy for commercial reasons, BLUE's appearance some 37 years later should please fans of both Ross and Motown.JazzTimes (p.117) - "Ross sings quite pleasantly over a smooth rhythm section and occasionally a big band, supported by lush strings and even French horns." Some of the best of her career! HARD TO BELIEVE THAT MOTOWN KEPT THIS JEWEL OF AN ALBUM LOCKED AWAY SINCE 1972. THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING ALBUM OF DIANA ROSS' CAREER! Slightly Disappointing... All the other reviewers are raving, but for me, there's something missing. Tracks which have been released before (SMILE, LITTLE GIRL BLUE, LOVE IS HERE TO STAY, YOU'VE CHANGED, MY MAN, T'AIN'T NOBODY'S BIZNESS IF I DO) don't really sound that much different from their original versions. The piano arrangement for SOLITUDE sounds exactly like YOU'VE CHANGED (just with different lyrics) and the only track that really stands out is I LOVES YA PORGY. Which is really too bad, I was really excited about this release. C+. Submitted by brian.thompson (New York, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Blue album
$20.89 All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24-bit technology.
Diana Ross would probably be offended by anyone who called her 1980 smash DIANA a comeback, but let's face it--after the flop of THE WIZ and the way that the disco revolution steamrollered so many of her old Motown compatriots' careers, that's exactly what it was. Wisely hooking up with Chic's Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards (both the most traditionally rooted and most fearless of the major disco-era producers), Ross sounds more forceful than she had in years--the helium-toned style of her early hits with the Supremes is worlds away from the assertive way she rips into the funky hit "Upside Down." Even better, the joyous, celebratory "I'm Coming Out" is probably the best solo track of her career, and the heartfelt "Now That You're Gone" is one of her most subtle ballads. The glossy Chic production might sound a bit dated to some ears, but it's matured much better than many similar albums of the era. Overall, this is, in many ways, Diana Ross's best solo record.

| | Diana Ross #1'S CD (2003) Remastered; Special Edition
Blue CD music
$10.39 Recorded between 1964 & 1981. Includes liner notes by Brian Chin.
Though not as critically revered as label-mates Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder, the Supremes were the most popular Motown act of the 1960s. Not only did the group rack up a string of #1 singles, that, in terms of frequency and quality often rivaled that of the Beatles, they were one of the first black combos in America to truly achieve mainstream white acceptance.
In many ways, the Supremes' music represented the Motown sound distilled to its essence; Hitsville USA's throbbing bass, relentlessly danceable drum beats, and ingenious arrangements were never so purely and perfectly geared for maximum pop appeal as on early hits such as "Where Did Our Love Go" and "Stop! In the Name of Love." On later, edgier tracks, like "You Keep Me Hangin' On" and "Love Child," the Supremes managed to adapt to the changing times without losing fans. Of course, even the Supremes' massive success couldn't match the superstar status garnered by their lead singer Diana Ross, with her definitive pop-soul classics such as "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" ...
| | Diana Ross & The Supremes Join The Temptations (1968)/Together (1969). CDs (2004)
Blue music CDs
$14.89 This double-disc set puts the studio collaborations of the Supremes and the Temptations--two of Motown's best groups--into one package. Moreover, the track list includes many of the finest songs produced by Berry Gordy's music empire, authored by the likes of Ashford & Simpson, Smokey Robinson, and Marvin Gaye, along with pop hits by Bacharach & David, Lennon & McCartney, and more.
Beginning with an uncharacteristically flashy medley, the rest of the set falls right into step. "Try It Baby," "I Second That Emotion," and a "Funky Broadway" are only a few of the treasures here. On disc two, Motown hits "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" and "I'll Be Doggone" are interspersed with covers such as the Band's "The Weight" and Sly Stone's "Sing a Simple Song." The vocal prowess of the Supremes and the Temptations should go without saying, but it is the lead and harmonic interplay between ...
| | Alexis Korner Kornerstoned: Anthology 1958-1983 CD (2006) (Import) United Kingdom
Blue songs
$24.79 While MUSICALLY RICH...AND FAMOUS documents the second half of British blues godfather Alexis Korner's career, KORNERSTONED adopts a more comprehensive approach, following the pioneering singer/guitarist from the very beginning of his musical life, all the way through every subsequent phase of his development. So we get not only his mid-1960s work with burgeoning blues-rock giants like Paul Rodgers and Steve Marriott, but also his `50s skiffle recordings (basically the British version of jug-band music) with the Ken Colyer band and his own skiffle group, and even an early acoustic guitar ...
| | Diana Ross Definitive Collection CD (2006) Remastered
Blue album
$10.39 At a mere 20 songs, a Diana Ross collection claiming to be 'definitive,' is immediately suspect. Is it possible to define one of pop music's most iconic divas in the space of a single CD? Motown's DEFINITIVE COLLECTION tackles the problem first by excluding Ross's work with the Supremes and focusing only on her solo endeavors. The album also opts ...

Blue album
$25.59 CRUSH was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album and "It's My Life" was nominated for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
When Jon Bon Jovi went into the studio to record his band's seventh studio album, he went from budding actor to Jersey rocker to remind the world where his bread-and-butter was. After the initial plan to team up hard-rock production gods Bob Rock and Bruce Fairbairn fell through due to the latter's death, an audition process was set up with alt-rock engineer Luke Ebbin (Splender) winning the job. The choice was a fortuitous one as here Bon Jovi updates its sound with a smattering of loops and impressive arrangements, without losing the pop crunch of its heyday.
Along the way, Bon Jovi tips its collective hat to the teen brigade invading the charts and the glory days of "Livin' On a Prayer" (the talk-box laden, Max Martin co-written single "It's My Life"), while still writing songs about blue-collar characters full of optimism (the Springsteen-flavored "Two Story Town"). CRUSH also contains the requisite power ballads for Bon Jovi's starry-eyed female fans ("Thank You for Loving Me," "Save the World") along with glam (the Elton John-inspired "Captain Crash & The Beauty Queen From Mars") and ...
| | H I M Love Metal CD (2003) (Import) Germany; Enhanced CD; Sweden
Blue CD music
$12.65 Ville Valo and his gloomy crew return to their metallic roots with LOVE METAL, the band's heaviest offering since their full-length debut. Launching full force into the propulsive "Buried Alive By Love," HIM explores dirgy, Sabbath-style rock ("Sweet Pandemonium"), emotive balladry ("This Fortress of Tears"), and high-speed angst ("Soul on Fire"). But amidst the turbo-charged reinvigoration, the group retains a flair for disarmingly beautiful sounds, with flowing piano work on "The Sacrament" and a mandolin accompaniment for "The Funeral of Hearts." The closing number, "The Path," unexpectedly summons a slow-paced, ...
