| | Gerry Mulligan Meets Scott Hamilton: Soft Lights & Sweet Music CD - Import Gerry Mulligan Discography of CDs
The legendary baritone saxophone player Gerry Mulligan and tenor player Scott Hamilton are heard here in a relaxed setting on a set recorded in the mid 1980s. Including five Mulligan originals, this set showcases both players' mastery of sophisticated, cool jazz soloing.
Starting in the late '50s, Gerry Mulligan recorded a series of encounters with fellow saxophonists that included such immortals as Stan Getz, Paul Desmond, Johnny Hodges, and Ben Webster. In 1986 he resumed the practice for this one date on which his baritone is matched with the tenor of the young great Scott Hamilton. The music, which includes warm ballads and fairly hot romps (five of the seven songs are Mulligan originals), consistently swing and are quite enjoyable. ~ Scott Yanow

Gerry Mulligan Meets Scott Hamilton: Soft Lights & Sweet Music music CDs
$12.89 Henry Threadgill has, in the framework of abstract music, been a stalwart, spontaneous composer whose personal sound is near impossible to identify, or certainly codify. A listener who enjoys very challenged music would have difficulty in discerning what is made up or written out. The elusive nature of Threadgill's kind of progressive jazz has to confound even those most oriented to his quirky pieces. Where the quintet Zooid lands in this quirky quandary of pegging a signature sound is subject to guesswork, but it definitely has its own brand of concentrated cohesion. Between Threadgill's scattershot flute and alto sax, the sleek tuba or trombone work of Jose Davila, and Liberty Ellman's thorny electric guitar, sparks are always flying about in a collective discourse that is completely unpredictable. Electric bass guitarist Stomu Takieshi and drummer Elliot Humberto Kavee are practically secondary in this ...

| | Chris Botti In Boston CDs (2009) With DVD
Gerry Mulligan Meets Scott Hamilton: Soft Lights & Sweet Music CD music
$14.99 A sequel of sorts to Chris Botti's 2006 PBS special, LIVE WITH ORCHESTRA & SPECIAL GUESTS, the September 2008 event LIVE IN BOSTON found the sartorially splendid cool jazz trumpeter accompanied by the Boston Symphony and a collection of celebrity vocalists. Also available as a DVD, the concert delivers an overview of popular music, with jazz standards like "I've Got You Under My Skin" right alongside "Ave Maria" and Sting's "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You." Whether featuring rocker Steven Tyler, AMERICAN IDOL chanteuse Katharine McPhee, or pop-opera superstar Josh Groban, all the tunes are presented in Botti's inimitable, Chet Baker-influenced uber-smooth style.
Chris Botti in Boston features trumpeter Chris Botti along with a bevy of name artists performing live with the Boston Pops Orchestra at Symphony Hall in 2008. Fully documented as a concert film and album, the night is an intimate and soulful birds-eye view of the supple-toned trumpeter who has grown into his role as a virtuoso since his time backing up Sting -- who of course appears here. Perhaps ...

Gerry Mulligan Meets Scott Hamilton: Soft Lights & Sweet Music music CDs
$7.75 Subtitled "A Pythagorean Theory Tale," Stevens' follow-up to the relatively conventional BUDDHA AND THE CHOCOLATE BOX is a semi-concept album with a sort of science fiction theme. The songs are set on the faraway planet Polygor, which "existed to give numbers to the universe," and they are sung from the point of prominent inhabitants of the planet, including the wise and deep-thinking old Novim ("Novim's Nightmare") and cranky emperor Monad ("Monad's Anthem"). The story line isn't easy to follow, but the songs themselves ...

| | Tangerine Dream An Introduction To... CD (2004)
Gerry Mulligan Meets Scott Hamilton: Soft Lights & Sweet Music album
$12.39 For a band that has released dozens of albums, an eight-song compilation really isn't sufficient as either a best-of or an introductory sampler, though the 73-minute running time is a good value for a single CD. A bigger problem with this anthology is that it offers a very thin slice of Tangerine Dream's whole tangerine, with a track apiece from their first four albums in the early ...
