| | Blue Aeroplanes Altitude CD - Import Blue Aeroplanes Discography of CDs
In conjunction with the re-release of the Blue Aeroplanes' landmark 1990 offering Swagger in January of 2006, frontman Gerard Langley elected to reunite for Altitude. While the resulting studio disc doesn't soar to any new heights for the band, it feels refreshing and alive just the same. Langley's acerbic, poetic rants are front and center and don't break from tradition as evidenced by "Bright Star Catalogue" and "Hexanal," where the Aeroplanes fly free of turbulence courtesy of spirited indie rock guitars. It's little surprise that Langley's pipes are better served in this environment, as he loses much of his magic in the confines of the sweetly toned, fiddle-laced "Tree Full of Starlings." Just the same, it's an anomaly overridden by the likes of the muscular "Raise the Roof High," which fulfills the promise of its title with ease. ~ John D. Luerssen
The Blue Aeroplanes' mighty brand new album Altitude is the group's first full-length studio opus since 1995's Rough Music, and their first major label release since 1991's Beat Songs. Led by a 'poet', Gerard Langley, the Aeroplanes lit up the early 90's with their album Swagger. Their shows were a riot. A band as individual and anarchic as the Aeroplanes were unlikely to survive the pile-em-high mentality of Britpop. After the Rough Music album of 1995, Langley headed underground, putting out occasional, low volume items on his own terms. Following the recent decision to re-release Swagger in January 2006, Langley decided it was time for a serious re-group. Pulling together and enhancing recordings he has made with various accomplices over the last 5 years, he has assembled this new Blue Aeroplanes album, Altitude. EMI. Personnel: Rivers . Audio Mixer: Rich Costey. Words such as "goofy" and "geeky" have long been used to describe Weezer's music, but these qualities are only one aspect of the band's sound; beneath all the humorous pop culture references and snarky attitude, Rivers Cuomo touched upon a myriad of serious topics including existential angst, aging, and sexual mores. While at first listen RADITUDE seems to be one of the Weezer's silliest albums (song titles include "The Girl Hot Hot" and "In the Mall"), there is, as usual, more than meets the ear. Even on the paean to debauchery "Can't Stop Partying" (the lyrics of which were written by rapper Jermaine Dupri), there is a certain undercurrent of melancholy, suggesting that the song may be simultaneously a celebration and a cry for help. "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To," for all its teen-pop bounce and smirking descriptions of a burgeoning romance, is a surprisingly sweet, honest, and distinctly adult look at the natural arc of a relationship. Perhaps more then ever before, RADITUDE revealed that Weezer can be appreciated on several levels. If Weezer's 2008 eponymous Red Album was all about singer/songwriter Rivers Cuomo coming to terms with heading into middle age, then 2009's ...
| | Flaming Lips Embryonic CD (2009)
Altitude
$11.25 Personnel: Karen O (vocals); Thorsten Wörmann (spoken vocals); Dave Fridmann (programming). Audio Mixers: Dave Fridmann; Flaming Lips. Recording information: Dull Roar Studios, Oklahoma City, OK (02/2009-07/2009); Tarbox Road Studios, Cassadaga, NY (02/2009-07/2009). CHRISTMAS ON MARS might be the Flaming Lips' bona fide sci-fi epic, but EMBRYONIC is the musical equivalent of the final scenes of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY: transformative chaos that results in a new start. From THE SOFT BULLETIN onward, the Lips seemed focused on tidying the loose ends of their earlier work, almost to the point of constraining themselves. Their wilder side is unleashed on Embryonic's 18 tracks, and the band sounds more off-the-cuff than it has in years -- some tracks are barely longer than snippets, others are rangy epics, and it all holds together so organically that listeners might wonder just how much these songs were edited. Musically, EMBRYONIC is the least polite the Flaming Lips have been in nearly two decades, mixing in-the-red drums, blobby, dubby bass, squelchy wah-wah guitars, and sparkling keyboards into a swirl of sounds that are strangely liquid and abrasive at ...
| | Brandi Carlile Give Up The Ghost CD (2009)
Altitude
$11.35 Audio Mixer: Jason Lader. If there was any flaw with Brandi Carlile's second album, THE STORY, it's that it was perhaps a touch too austere, painted in amber tones by producer T Bone Burnett. Its 2009 sequel, GIVE UP THE GHOST, opens up and breathes, perhaps partially due to swapping T Bone for Rick Rubin, who retains the spooky, serious vibe but makes things a little less chilly. This isn't sealed off; there is room for guests here, including such L.A. linchpins as Benmont Tench and Red Hot Chili Pepper Chad Smith, but also Elton John and his arranger, Paul Buckmaster. Tellingly, their presence is felt more than heard, as they never remove the spotlight from Carlile, who remains a singularly powerful singer/songwriter. When the setting is spartan, her voice is haunting and gripping, wrenching out operatic emotions, but GIVE UP THE GHOST trumps THE STORY because Carlile allows herself to lighten up too, to rock again on "Dreams" and jump into the rollicking "Caroline," which does indeed recall the barrelhouse jaunt of HONKY CHATEAU. Carlile still prefers sobriety to levity but it never feels affected; it's music that gets under your skin and cuts to the bone. If there was any flaw with Brandi Carlile's second album, The Story, it's that it was perhaps a touch too austere, ...

$12.49 The Polyphonic Spree includes: Time DeLaughter (vocals, guitar); Jennifer Jobe (vocals); Todd Berridge (viola); Maria Jeffers (cello); Audrey Easley (flute, piccolo); Mark McKeever (trumpet, piano, keyboards, Moog synthesizer); Mark Pirro (bass). Talk about your teenage symphonies to God. The Polyphonic Spree create the most euphoric, uplifting pop music imaginable. A self-described symphonic pop band crediting an astounding 29 members, their guilelessly spiritual lyrics and flowing white robes suggest they're a cult act in both the literal and figurative sense of the term, but the sheer joy of their music is undeniably persuasive, evoking the otherworldly brilliance of everything ...
