The beautifully remastered version of the Moody Blues's 1970 back-to-basics album (translation: they cut way back on the overdubs) strips away the original aural murk at last, and includes informative liner-note interviews with the band about the recording process. Standout tracks include the classic sort-of protest song "Question" and "It's Up to You," one of singer/guitarist Justin Hayward's most authoritatively wistful riff-rockers.
There is a clear attempt to pare back the lush excesses of their earlier work in favor of a leaner rock sound, as heard on cuts like John Lodge's pell-mell "The Tortoise and the Hare." Still, one of the album's standouts is Ray Thomas's "And the Tide Rushes In," a lovely psychedelic ballad of the sort that moved the Who's Pete Townshend to remark that the Moody Blues' albums were so gorgeously produced that listening to them was like "being in church." A QUESTION OF BALANCE is a fine album, and a clear preparation for its successor EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FAVOUR, one of the band's finest moments.

Rolling Stone (11/12/70, p.40) - "...an abundance of spiritual and other insights and poetry that recalled the best of - yes, I dare say it - Gibran, colossal Straussian orchestrations simulated by a mellotron and heavenly choirs....an unexaggerably beautiful record..." Uncut (p.120) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[B]y 1970's A QUESTION OF TIME, they'd shifted to a simpler approach, easier to recreate live."

How is it we are here........ This disc sounds amazing!!!!! All the instuments have clarity that was missing in the older releases. The MELLOTRON is right there, as if you were sitting there in front of it...so cool! The Balance (my favourite track) is chilling...The extra tracks are great. Mike's Number One is good, but better suited for one Mike"s solo albums. The BBC stuff is dissapointing...crappy quality sound wise. That aside, buy this disc!!!!!A neccessity for all Moodies fans, young and old!

A pleasant listening experience. Overall a good disc. Previous to purchasing this disc,I had only heard a couple of the songs on it before. Hardcore fans of the band will no doubt wish to add it to their collection. Casual fans will better served by buying "On The Threshold Of A Dream" or "Days Of Future Passed". No Questin - Its The Best! "Question Of Balance" was a high-hitter for the Moody Blues and with this set, not only do you get the fantastically crisp sound of SACD, but they have finally released some rare tracks. All the bonus and alternate mix tracks are of fine quality and the difference may be as subtle as additional back-up vocals or extra instruments.
No previous Moody Blues album has contained such rare BBC sessions, outtakes and alternate mixes. The differences are subtle but many include backup vocals, new instruments and a different pacing to the songs. One needs no other recording of this classic album. The box is half plastic and half cardboard which might not last as long as a regular CD package. However, the liner package notes are exhaustive with many new pictures and a complete history.
