Doug Martsch and his bandmates in Built to Spill have delivered a unique dose of engaging and smartly constructed indie rock with nearly every record they've made, and 2006's YOU IN REVERSE is no exception. Still marked by Martsch's winding vocal melodies and, especially, his explosive, ever-imaginative guitar heroics, the album equals, and arguably surpasses, the band's previous efforts.
While Martsch's vocal lines, lyrics, and dazzling six-string work are as surreal and psychedelic as ever, YOU IN REVERSE seems comparatively thoughtful and reigned in; the band's sonic wildness is sublimated into a more song-oriented approach that at times has folky overtones. Yet Martsch remains the greatest indie-rock guitar hero since J. Mascis, and fans certainly won't be disappointed on that count (just check out the solo on "Conventional Wisdom" for confirmation).

Rolling Stone (p.67) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he album is a dog-eared collection of front-porch melodies and buzzy guitar jams, with Neil Young and Frank Black as spiritual godfathers." Entertainment Weekly (p.86) - "[T]racks like hypnotic slow-burner 'Goin' Against Your Mind' and the jaunty 'Conventional Wisdom' are more enjoyably organic-sounding than most of 2001's [album]..." -- Grade: B+ Uncut (p.96) - 3 stars out of 5 -- [I]t's the great 'Liar' that finds the best blend of the band's melodies and imploring vocals. It's good to hear again." Magnet (p.89) - "[I]t's wistful but shiny....YOU IN REVERSE strikes the perfect balance. 'Goin' Against Your Mind' is like a Built To Spill greatest hits-package all in one song..." St. Charles and Melpomene Streets in New Orleans. I was immediately attracted to the first song. So, I asked the waitress what I was listening to and the rest is history. This is a very unique and most welcomed album. Thank you Slice and kudos for Built to Spill. Submitted by balliviero (New Orleans, LA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
This cd was ok Their previous album "keep it like a secret" is a lot better than this one. The songs were to slow at times and the guitar tracks weren't recorded like their previous albums. This wasn't a bad record, but it could of been better. Submitted by ctuvayanonta (Grand Terrace, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Purchase You In Reverse CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Built To Spill Perfect From Now On CD (1997)
You In Reverse
$8.95 Whereas on 1995's BUILT TO SPILL CAUSTIC RESIN EP, Built to Spill main-man Doug Martsch used a couple of silly premises and a Kicking Giant cover to get to the guitar flamethrowas, on PERFECT FROM NOW ON, Martsch and fellow axe-grinder Brett Netson duel on tunes that could've been some of the loveliest, most inventive, three-minute guitar-pop of the '90s. Could've been, that is, without those fantastic duels. Instead, PERFECT FROM NOW ON, the band's major-label debut, strikes a balance between tunesmanship and molten-lava guitar flow.
Martsch, who has surrounded himself with a revolving cast of players for most of Built To Spill's existence, has an unassuming voice, and the lyrics on PERFECT FROM NOW ON hint at insecurities ...
| | Built To Spill Keep It Like A Secret CD (1999)
You In Reverse
$8.55 Principally recorded at Bear Creek, Woodinville, Washington in November 1997.
Having led Built to Spill down the road of majestic guitar duels on 1997's PERFECT FROM NOW ON, group mastermind Doug Martsch decided to downplay (but not shelve) his six-string heroics here. Instead, the focus of Built to Spill's fourth proper full-length is the ensemble playing. Having for the first time in B2S' existence retained his rhythm section (bassist Brett Nelson, drummer Scott Plouf) for a second consecutive album, Martsch shows off what may be the strongest power trio in rock circa ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
You In Reverse
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood ...
| | Modest Mouse Good News For People Who Love Bad News CD (2004)
You In Reverse
$9.39 The Dirty Dozen Brass Band offers the opening fanfare for Modest Mouse's sixth full-length, GOOD NEWS FOR PEOPLE WHO LIKE BAD NEWS, a fitting intro for the outfit's most majestic record to date. On their prior major-label recordings, the (formerly) indie icons opted for wandering, spacey arrangements to accompany Isaac Brock's magnificently obtuse poetics. GOOD NEWS revives the immediacy of the band's earlier releases, but furthers the production values (without too much polish), ...
| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)

$12.05 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast ...

You In Reverse
$9.95 COLONEL JEFFREY PUMPERNICKEL features songs based on chapters of a story written by Chris Slusarenko.
Colonel Jeffrey Pumpernickel, the indie rock opera by Portland, Oregon's Chris Slusarenko, probably won't gain recognition for its storyline, but rather for the big-name talents that have created songs specifically for the project. "I always thought it would be interesting to listen to an album where different bands tell parts of a larger story, a concept album, in reverse," says Slusarenko, who is perhaps better known for his own musical endeavors, Svelt ...
