Lying Awake album
$10.69 Many contestants on AMERICAN IDOL and similar TV shows go on to greater success, but due to their relative lack of experience, often have a hard time finding their niche. Not Miranda Lambert--when KEROSENE was released in 2005, the NASHVILLE STAR third-place winner was barely out of her teens, but she had already spent years honing her craft in bars. In addition to being a confident vocalist and strong-willed businessperson, Lambert is a crafty songwriter whose work is easily on par with that of Nashville veterans twice her age.
The title track is a pounding, attitude-filled country-rocker reminiscent of John Cougar Mellencamp's "Rain on the Scarecrow." (That this diminutive young blonde woman can spit out lines like "Trade the truth for a lie/Cheatin' ain't really a crime" so convincingly is also startling.) "I Can't Be Bothered" is straight-up honky-tonk, replete with whining steel guitar, Buck Owens-worthy twangy Telecaster, and a jaunty dance beat, while "Me and Charlie Talking" is funky swamp-country of the Jerry Reed variety, albeit with lovelorn lyrics that reveal Lambert's old soul. An uncommonly accomplished debut, KEROSENE is the first outing by a genuine all-around talent.
This dualdisc from the country artist includes the album on the ...
| | Metallica Death Magnetic CD (2008)
Lying Awake CD music
$15.29 The world at large got a fly-on-the-wall view of the creation of Metallica's 2003 album, ST. ANGER, via the documentary SOME KIND OF MONSTER, so we know they consciously tried to keep things contemporary at that time by avoiding fleet-fingered solos and eschewing the sound of the "old" Metallica. If that hoary old term "return to form" ever applied to a rock album, though, it's ANGER's follow-up, DEATH MAGNETIC.
In the five years between the two releases, Metallica seem to have gotten back in touch with the raw power of their classic period, with a little help from legendary producer Rick Rubin. One listen to the 10-minute epic "Suicide & Redemption" with its mix of raw rock ferocity and complex musical development should tell you the old Metallica's back in business. Long tracks with complex structures and intricate, speedy riffs abound. Most appealing for longtime fans may be the ...
| | Susan Tedeschi Back To The River CD (2008)
Lying Awake music CDs
$11.16 While its predecessor, 2005's HOPE AND DESIRE, found blues-rocker Susan Tedeschi getting on a soul train, BACK TO THE RIVER represents that phrase beloved by hardcore fans of any artist, "a return to form." Tedeschi is back to the hard-hitting, bluesy sound with which she made her name, and her joy at this stylistic homecoming is clearly audible; you can hear it both in the throaty abandon of her vocals and in the unfettered fury with which she digs into her guitar solos. While there's still a soul flavor present in some of the tracks here, it takes a back seat to the visceral, string-bending, blues-belting sound that will forever be identified as Tedeschi's true trademark.

| | Cure 4:13 Dream CD (2008)
Lying Awake songs
$11.19 Reportedly whittled down from more than 30 tracks, the Cure's 13th album, 4:13 DREAM, finds black-clad frontman Robert Smith leading his long-running goth/post-punk ensemble through a dynamic set of songs that often nods to past records, while still sounding at home in 2008. Adding to the admirably vintage part of DREAM's equation is the returning guitarist/keyboardist Porl Thompson, who last played with the band in the early 1990s, and essentially replaces departed members Perry Bamonte and Roger O'Donnell.
DREAM begins with the beautifully drifting "Underneath the Stars," a track that evokes the group's lauded DISINTEGRATION era, and then quickly shifts into pop mode as "The Only One" bounces on pure romantic elation. Elsewhere, Smith leads the Cure into punchier, edgier territory with "Sleep ...
| | Cat Stevens Tea For The Tillerman CDs (1970) Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Lying Awake album
$21.64 Digitally remastered by Bill Levenson (December 1999, Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN is one of Cat Stevens's finest albums, and a gem in the crown of early 1970s singer/songwriterdom. Stevens manages to have his cake and eat it too, simultaneously achieving pop accessibility and artistic relevance. While inviting rhythms (buoyed by Stevens's dynamic acoustic strumming) and pop hooks abound, the feel is decidedly gentle and spare. Apart from the occasional string section, Stevens is accompanied only by a three-piece band as he sings his introspective lyrics with appreciable fervor.
While there are some relatively conventional love songs here ("Hard Headed Woman," "Wild World"), the most memorable moments come when Stevens's lyrics venture further afield. "Father and Son" is a poignant but realistic and unsentimental portrait of the generation gap, capable of reducing any given dad or junior to tears. "On the Road to Find Out" and "But I Might Die Tonight" reflect Stevens's existential dilemmas, and the resulting spiritual quest that would later lead him to embrace the Islamic faith. The graceful beauty of arrangements, performances, and songs makes TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN a folk-rock classic.
While there are some relatively conventional love songs here ("Hard Headed Woman," "Wild World"), the most memorable ...
| | New Order Low-Life CDs (1985) Collector's Edition; Remastered
Lying Awake CD music
$19.54 With LOW-LIFE, New Order truly hit their stride with their highly individual combination of infectious rhythms, inventive composition and performances full of conviction. The vulnerable lyrics and earnest delivery of Bernard Sumner are in top form; his voice is at last a completely developed instrument, clear and comfortable as it wraps itself around such memorable tracks as the opening "Love Vigilantes," a solid, purely guitar-driven narrative.
Following immediately and in sharp contrast ...

Lying Awake music CDs
$9.25 THE COMPLETE STONE ROSES compiles singles, B-sides and album tracks from 1987-1990.
The title of THE COMPLETE STONE ROSES is not entirely accurate. The disc is one of the settlements resulting from the longstanding legal battles between the Manchester band and its former label, Silvertone Records. THE COMPLETE collects the singles from the Roses' classic first album, 1989's THE STONE ROSES, along with such excellent, pre-and-post-album ...
