If you are on an eclectic music diet -- if you need to listen to a little bit of everything in order to stay in shape -- then The Castle Massacre will feel to you like a multi-vitamin. The Norwegian quintet Ping jump around from style to style, reinventing themselves for each of the album's 15 tracks, yet finding a way to carry forward a strong group identity. Pranksters, mavericks, or geniuses? A bit of all three, it seems. There is a healthy dose of humor in this album, from silly lyrics (made sillier by an approximate use of the English language) to silly melodies, but there are also some very strong grooves, efficient songwriting, and surprises by the ton. The music switches around from electro-pop to heavy prog rock, '70s funk, and Zappa-esque twists. Playing the name game, the best approximation would be "the bastard son of Parliament and Black Sabbath, delivered by Frank Zappa," but that will mean something only if you listen to the whole album -- and it still doesn't account for the electronica influence in the hilarious opener "Bow to the Beagle," or "Inside a Rock"'s back vocal line stolen from KC & the Sunshine Band, among numerous other oddities. Truth is, nobody can possibly explain to you how wacky The Castle Massacre is. However, rest assured that this is not a hodgepodge album, a collection of mismatched snippets. These guys know what they are doing and they do it marvelously well. This is one of the more exhilarating, entertaining albums of 2006. ~ François Couture

| | Lady Gaga Fame Monster CDs (2009) Deluxe Edition
Castle Massacre CD music
$16.24 Initially planned solely as a standard double-disc reissue in the wake of the blockbuster success of The Fame, Lady Gaga decided to release the new material as a separate EP called The Fame Monster in addition to the standard two-CD set, where it's tacked onto a now standardized version of her debut. It's a nice move for fans, plus it helps emphasize the new material, which does act as a bridge from the debut to a forthcoming full-length. Everything on The Fame Monster bears a galvanized Eurotrash finish, as evident on the heavy steel synths of "Bad Romance" and the updated ABBA revision "Alejandro," as it is on the rock & roll ballad "Speechless" -- its big guitars lifted from Noel Gallagher -- and the wonderful, perverse march "Teeth." Even the stuttering splices on "Telephone," a duet with Beyoncé, leans to the other side of the Atlantic, which just emphasizes the otherness that's become Gaga's calling card. And even as she's becoming omnipresent, with her songs mingling with those who co-opt her on the radio, she still is slightly skewed, willing to go so far over the top she goes beyond camp, yet still channeling it through songs that are written, not just hooks. The Fame ...
| | Neil Young Harvest Moon Live CD (2009)
Castle Massacre music CDs
$14.44 Unlike previous entries in Neil Young's Archives series, Dreamin' Man Live '92 does not capture a specific gig. Instead, it's a compilation of highlights from the tour he took prior to recording Harvest Moon, as he aired the album's ten songs alone with his guitar (or on one occasion each, his piano and banjo). Although every one of the album's cuts is here, this isn't a strict re-creation ...
| | Mariah Carey Merry Christmas CD (1994)
Castle Massacre songs
$8.75 At this stage of her career Mariah Carey does not need to prove herself, but her voice is so powerful that with each new recording she, once again, reminds you: "Listen to what I can do." Vocal gymnastics and Christmas songs are not often thought of as a compatible combination, but on MERRY CHRISTMAS Mariah jumps, climbs, crawls, twirls and dashes her way through both traditional fare and original Christmas songs.
She shifts through styles, offering fans from all musical camps a gift of their own. Her "Silent Night" shows off a studied vocalization where liquid phrasing is key. "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)" shows off a dynamic voice that is hard to match. She has fun with the Phil Spector goodie ...

| | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Castle Massacre CD music
$17.59 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a ...

| | An Invitation To Cry: Best Of The Magicians CD (1999)
Castle Massacre CD music
$11.59 Digitally remastered by Bob Irwin (Sundazed Studios, Coxsackie, New York).
The Magicians ('60s Pop/Rock): John Townley, Allan "Jake" Jacobs (guitar); Garry Bonner (bass guitar); Alan Gordon (drums).
Both sides of their four 1965-1967 singles on Columbia, plus five previously unissued tracks from the same period. The possibility of an album's worth of Magicians' material has long intrigued collectors of '60s music, most of whom are only familiar with their "An Invitation to Cry" single from Nuggets. The rest of the material is OK, but a bit of a letdown, lacking any standout numbers on the order of "An Invitation to Cry." Too, the Magicians didn't seem to have the time to solidify a special sound. At times it's Lovin' Spoonful-like ...

Castle Massacre CD music
$16.45 "They bill themselves as 'Southwest Montana's most country country western band.' That's not a claim I'm going to argue about with Gallatin Gateway's Twang.
