Castle Massacre album
$15.18 MONUMENTS & MELODIES is an elliptical allusion to the hits and highlights contained within this 2009 retrospective, a double-disc set that's separated into a CD of singles and a CD of rarities. The first disc does its job efficiently, running through all but two of Incubus' Billboard hits--the minor mainstream rock radio hits "Circles" and "Make a Move" are missing, but the non-charting single "Are You In?" is in its place--bookended by two strong new Brendan O'Brien productions, "Black Heart Inertia" and "Midnight Swim." The second disc is devoted primarily to B-sides and other stray non-LP tracks, including an acoustic version of "A Certain Shade of Green," a remix of "Pantomime," and a ham-fisted cover of Prince's "Let's Go Crazy," where they get the riff slightly wrong. For the devoted, this disc does provide a nice service of rounding up the tunes that ...
| | Best Of The Moody Blues CD (1996)
Castle Massacre CD music
$12.65 THE BEST OF THE MOODY BLUES contains vintage photographs and a conversation with Justin Hayward.
Recorded between 1964 and 1988. Includes liner notes by John Reed.
By keeping it simple and sticking to the hits, this collection successfully relates the story of this pioneering band. The Moody Blues began as a Gerry & the Pacemakers-like, R&B-influenced band fronted by sad-voiced singer Denny Laine, who is heard here on "Go Now." Laine was replaced by Justin Hayward, keyboardist Mike Pinder brought in a Mellotron, and the band hooked up with the London Symphony Orchestra to make the first orchestral-rock album DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED, from which "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Nights in White ...

| | Axel Rudi Pell Best Of-Anniversary Edition CD (2009) Anniversary Edition
Castle Massacre CD music
$9.64 For many rock historians, the 1980s officially ended when Nirvana and Pearl Jam were burning up the charts in 1991 and 1992 and major labels started signing alternative rock acts left and right. For some rockers, however, the 1980s never ended--and German guitarist/songwriter Axel Rudi Pell's unwavering commitment to pre-'90s-style metal and hard rock is evident throughout BEST OF AXEL RUDI PELL: ANNIVERSARY EDITION. This 79-minute CD spotlights previously released material from Pell's Johnny Gioeli era; Pell hired Gioeli as his vocalist in 1998, and Gioeli received such a favorable response that Pell was still using him 11 years later in 2009. Although Pell's own songs dominate BEST OF AXEL RUDI PELL, this collection also contains two covers from 2007's DIAMONDS UNLOCKED: Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" and U2's 2000 hit "Beautiful Day," both of which become more hard-rocking in Pell's hands. Although hardly the last word on Pell's solo output of the 1990s and 2000s, BEST OF AXEL RUDI PELL is enthusiastically recommended to casual listeners.
Pell's career began in 1980 with the band, Steeler, who sold over 30,000 copies of ...

Castle Massacre album
$18.19 For his side project Murderdolls, Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison threw a number of curves at Slipknot fans. For one thing, he emerged from behind the drumkit to play guitar, along with Tripp Eisen of Static-X fame. For another, the dark, grinding industrial metal of Slipknot is forsaken in favor a more light-hearted (at least relatively) and punk-inspired approach. While there are plenty of grisly scenarios presented in the lyrics here, they're generally of the trashy, ...

| | Johnny Rivers Last Train To Memphis CD (1998)
Castle Massacre songs
$11.59 Principally recorded at Smartso Digital, Studio City, California, Oceanway Studios, Hollywood, California, Studio Masters, Los Angeles, California, Sun Studio, Memphis, Tennessee and Entourage Studios, North Hollywood, California between 1991 and 1998. Includes liner notes by Cindy Hazen.
Johnny Rivers' first album of new material in nearly two decades, 1998's LAST TRAIN TO MEMPHIS is a fine collection of Rivers originals and the usual batch of oldies reinterpreted in that inimitable Rivers way. Rivers first made his name with his residency at the Whiskey A-Go-Go on Sunset Strip, and it's probably not a coincidence that this album's leadoff track is called "Down at the House of Blues," after the 1990s mass-market pretender to the Whiskey's long-vacated throne.
Another Rivers original, the weepy "Don't Let the Rain Come Down" is a fine new track. A cover of the Casinos' "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye," and a tribute to Carl Perkins built on a "Blue Suede Shoes" that interpolates bits of other Perkins classics, are as good as any of Rivers' '60s covers. One of the best interpretive singers of his ...

| | Www Twang Last Of The White-Hot Rednecks CD (2007)
Castle Massacre CD music
$16.45 "They bill themselves as “Southwest Montana’s most country country western band.” That’s not a claim I’m going to argue about with Gallatin Gateway’s www.Twang. A favorite live dance band, they mix standard cover tunes with equally well-written originals on their first CD. My favorites are their own songs by guitarists Buck Buchanan and Duke Sharp. Buchanan co-wrote the soon-to-be classic “Your Cheatin’ Heart (Stays on the Juke Box)” with producer Kenny Williams, who, along with fellow Montana Rose, Claudia Williams, provides finely tuned harmony vocals throughout. Their rough-around-the-edges delivery actually adds to their honky tonk authenticity. I can’t find anything to criticize in their musicianship, which is rounded out by Russ Olsen on bass, Johnny Regan on drums, and Sandy Dodge on sweet steel guitar. The strongest ...
