| | Sigur Ros Agaetis Byrjun CD (1999)
Bric A Brac CD music
$11.65 This stately Iceland rock outfit took the alternative-music world by storm with its second album, AGAETIS BYRJUN--a haunting, eloquent, 76-minute instant classic. Frontman Jon Por Birgisson sings in a language he calls "Hopelandic" (a combination of Icelandic and his own angelic calling), over the lyrical ebb and flow of feedback-drenched guitar, gushing keyboards, gently driving bass, and drums that crash like the surf of an alien ocean. After a droning beginning, the curtains suddenly part with "Svefn-G-Englar," revealing a sound as wide open and exhilarating as Iceland's landscape. Later, the mournful violin and slowly cascading beats of "Flugufrelsarinn" give way to ghostly horn sections, orchestral crescendos, stretches of silence, crashing dissonance, sad piano lines, and a Radiohead-esque dip into the realm ...
| | Gregory Isaacs Night Nurse CD (1982) Remastered
Bric A Brac music CDs
$10.45 A classic release from one of Jamaica's greats, NIGHT NURSE shows the Cool Ruler at his best--performing melodic, chilled reggae such as the title track and "Hot Stepper." The title track was a hit for Simply Red when they covered it in 1997. Although at his most prolific in the mid '80s, when he was beset by financial problems, Isaacs managed to maintain the quality of his material as this album proves. The Roots Radics provide excellent backing for Isaacs' smooth vocals. Perhaps a bit too mellow for fans of more militant reggae such as that purveyed by the Revolutionaries, time has nevertheless proved this to be a classic reggae album--the epitome of the feel-good Jamaican sound.
Although his 1981 album, More Gregory, was picked up for international distribution, Gregory Isaacs' 1982 release, Night Nurse, was his first to be designed for an audience outside Jamaica. Accordingly, Island Records head Chris Blackwell upgraded the overall sound quality, making this Isaacs' most professional-sounding record yet, and he brought in synthesizer player Wally Badarou to overdub keyboard parts ...

| | Al DiMeola Winter Nights CD (1999)
Bric A Brac songs
$9.79 Al di Meola's first so-called Christmas album is a relaxed, flowing, intensely musical affair that jazzers, world music buffs, and new agers will feel equally comfortable with. Mostly, he steers away from the often-cracked chestnuts, composing several nice tunes of his own ("Zima," the leadoff cut, is especially inviting), playing acoustic guitar ...

$9.99 | | Susheela Raman Music For Crocodiles CD (2006)
Bric A Brac CD music
$13.49 Susheela Raman's third album shows a new dimension to her performances. Previously, she performed largely in an Indian-infused vein with British influences. Now, she has more straightforward pop aesthetics, though with a massive dose of ethnic instrumentation and musical motives thrown in. Her voice is a bit breathier than previously, and she uses it to good effect. The overall loss of a more central ethnic sound is perhaps a bit disappointing to those who really enjoyed her previous albums (though there are some very strong influences yet, including a few entire songs), but there are still some very nice touches. The accompanying veena and tabla here and there provide interesting ornamentation and rhythms, and strong blues inflections give the album some additional depth all around. Moreover, the adaptation of some old Tyagaraja works as well as other Carnatic ragas (and maybe a Vedic script) provide meat for ...
