(17 Customer Reviews)
The man who brought trailer-trash chic to southern hip-hop keeps one eye on his roots while moving ahead with THE CHARM. There are still Dirty South beats aplenty, with all the grease and groove the term implies, and from the very first track Sparxxx emphasizes his continued status as a "country boy." At the same time, the production aesthetic of the album represents the next step in Bubba's evolution, as it marks his entrée into the world of Outkast's Organized Noize production squad. Not only does this new move widen the rapper's horizons, but the impressive guest stars (heavy hitters like Ying Yang Twins and Petey Pablo) and label representation courtesy of Big Boi himself broaden the scope of THE CHARM even further.Entertainment Weekly (p.59) - "The white rapper is insanely talented -- his drawling flow stays loose and casual even as he's spitting taut verses." -- Grade: B - Q (p.119) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[With] inventive productions from Timbaland and OutKast's backroom team Organized Noise..." Charm
$6.79 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" ...
| | Ying Yang Twins United State Of Atlanta CD (2005)
Charm
$14.45 Like Outkast, the Ying Yang Twins are progenitors of southern hip-hop that's a mix of gangsta rap, party jams, and jittery beats, and on UNITED STATE OF ATLANTA the Ying Yang Twins approach the game like a house party thrown in a recording studio. For starters, the wide variety of guests popping up throughout this 70-minute-plus project adds a feeling of randomness, recklessness, and fun. Neo-soul crooner Anthony Hamilton provides some honeyed vocals on the gospel-flavored "Long Time," and Maroon 5's Adam Levine holds his own on the electro-funk of "Live Again," with its nod to the travails of exotic dancers. There's also plenty of support from Dirty South brethren such ...
| | Chamillionaire Sound Of Revenge CD (2005) Parental Advisory
Charm
$13.35 With THE SOUND OF REVENGE, Chamillionaire's 2005 Universal debut, the Houston-based rapper makes the most of his major-label deal, which includes his own Chamillitary imprint. On SOR, Paul Wall's former collaborator amps up that duo's signature chopped-and-screwed mixtape sound with heavy-duty arrangements that ...
| | E-40 My Ghetto Report Card CD (2006)
Charm
$15.65 The veteran rapper invites a host of guests, including Bay-area talent The Federation ("Go Hard or Go Home") and R&B crooner T-Pain ("U and Dat"), to contribute to MY GHETTO REPORT CARD. And while the platinum-selling MC delivers his own laid-back flow over thick bass kicks and catchy hand-claps, he also introduces the "hyphy" movement to a national audience. Basically the Bay Area's version of crunk, hyphy is a jittery, fast paced, synth-powered strain of hip-hop that will keep the clubs bouncing and the heads nodding as long E-40 has anything to say about it.
Having helped bring ghetto slang like "It's ...
| | L L Cool J Todd Smith CD (2006)
Charm
$10.59 LL Cool J himself would warn listeners against calling it a comeback, because he's been around since the mid-1980s churning out records the whole time. And while 2006's TODD SMITH doesn't pack near the punch of RADIO or even '90s material like MAMA SAID KNOCK YOU OUT, the ...
