| | George Benson Songs And Stories CD (2009)
Nu Jazz Cool: The Essential Album
$15.65 George Benson's sound is so recognizable that, in its way, it's quite comforting to hear his voice or his guitar come across on the radio or in a club. His recordings have been polished and extravagant in many cases, but there are those signature elements-his relaxed delivery and silky touch on the strings and his voice, as evocative as a cool breeze floating across a hot summer night. SONGS AND STORIES doesn't deviate from his formula a great deal, but it doesn't have to. He's chosen ten ubiquitous pop tunes from a variety of songwriters (and one by a relatively new kid on the block), and with the help of producers ...

Nu Jazz Cool: The Essential Album
$9.65 An indisputable jazz classic, Bill Evans's PORTRAIT IN JAZZ was originally released in 1959, issued on CD in the early `90s, then remastered and re-released in 2008. The crisp remastering is a joy, and brings the glorious music made by the legendary pianist and his trio into sharp, gorgeous relief. Evans's treatments of standards and classics ...

| | They Might Be Giants Spine CD (2004)
Nu Jazz Cool: The Essential Album
$14.65 A new THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS release is somewhat akin to an issue of Mad Magazine with a bonus CD; wit, sarcasm, and satire abound, accompanied by all manner of sonic finery. Though Johns Flansburgh and Linnell are best known for the cartoonish, humor-filled aspect of their songs, there's often something deeper lurking below the surface. On THE SPINE, while there's as much quirky cleverness as on previous TMBG albums, there seems to be more of an emotional core to many of the tracks.
There's a palpable sense of disillusionment and dislocation at the heart of "Memo to Human Resources," brought home by a melancholy, Beatles-like structure. The post-New Wave power pop of "Broke in Two" strolls gingerly through the shards of a painful past. The protagonist of "I Can't Hide from My Mind" is engaged in the confusing process of finding his own center. Of course, there's plenty of jubilant absurdism in the grand Giants tradition, as well, but THE SPINE has more to offer those willing ...

Nu Jazz Cool: The Essential Album
$23.75 All scores were composed by London and Escarbe, and performed by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. The second of the series, Requiem-Mezzo Forte, further develops the classical and operatic influences within a more identifiably 'metal' framework. Combining traditional metal instrumentation with rich orchestral arrangements, Mezzo Forte captures the dramatic, dark melodic sensibility that Virgin Black fans have come to love and respect. The final album of the series, Requiem-Fortissimo, is a fierce statement of grief, and the band's heaviest work yet. Combining the brutality ...
