| | Laura Pausini Resta In Ascolto CD (2004) Italian Edition
Las Puertas Del Infierno
$8.29 One linguistic myth is that anyone who speaks Spanish is automatically fluent in Italian; the languages are quite similar, but similar is by no means the same as identical. However, it is true that anyone who is fluent in Italian has a definite advantage
No stranger to success, Europop sensation Laura Pausini sold over 25 million albums in her first decade or so of recording, quite a feat for someone who was just turning 30 years old and had never broken into the lucrative English-language market. Yet she essentially struck out when she did try to cross over to that English-language market in 2002 with From the Inside. Put mildly, the album bombed stateside. Its qualities (and the qualities of stateside consumers) aside, it was the first full-fledged failure Pausini had experienced in a career of multi-million-selling albums and sold-out world tours. Here was someone who had sung for Pope John Paul II at Christmas and for Barbra Streisand at a birthday party, yet she couldn't sing for ordinary Americans, who just weren't interested in her melodramatic schmaltz. And so Pausini took a sizable break, perhaps the first of her whirlwind, world-conquering career. When she did finally emerge from her self-imposed silence, she returned with Escucha, her first Spanish-language album in four long years (not counting her best-of collection in 2001). (The album was also released in an Italian-language version, Resta in Ascolto.) Expectations were high, obviously, for she'd been gone for what felt like an eon in music years, and they were also high because of the dissatisfaction her Romance-language audience felt with her after the English-only From the Inside and its resulting mixed reception internationally. ...
| | Vicente Fernandez Historia De Un Idolo Vol. 2 CD (2002)
Las Puertas Del Infierno
$10.09 Vicente Fernández is the king of ranchera. Although he's unknown to most Anglos, to Mexicans he's a revered name, a man who's sold over 40 million albums in his career, and whose concerts are always standing room only. His is a name to be mentioned alongside José Alfredo Jiménez and other greats. Certainly the songs on this second collection of what are really greatest hits come from the pens of ranchera's great composers, like Jiménez with the classic "El Rey" and Juan Gabriel's sweeping "Amor Eterno." The arrangements are lavish, often heavily swathed in strings, but don't be fooled into thinking it's all saccharine. Underneath it all, the very Mexican heart of mariachi music beats loudly. You can always hear the guitar, and the horns offer subtle echoes of the voice. And what a voice Fernández has, as big as Mexico itself, and full of emotion and subtlety -- just listen to the sublime "Volver, Volver," for example, or the softer majesty ...

| | Vicente Fernandez Para Siempre CD (2007)
Las Puertas Del Infierno
$9.99 The Mexican ranchera singer Vicente Fernandez was already a cultural icon by the late 1960s. By the early 2000s, a time that saw ranchera reaching untold levels of popularity in both Mexico and the United States, Fernandez had become a towering legend. Not surprisingly, perhaps, the man's moving, romantic vocals showed no signs of losing their power, as 2007's PARA SIEMPRE VICENTE FERNANDEZ proved. A collaboration with acclaimed Norteno songwriter Joan Sebastian, PARA SIEMPRE is a winning collection, showcasing both Fernandez's inimitable style and Sebastian's fine songs.

| | Park Hyatt Chicago: On The Seventh CD (2004) Digipak
Las Puertas Del Infierno
$16.39 Park Hyatt Chicago commissioned King Britt to put together this DJ mix, apparently intended to act as a soundtrack for their seventh floor -- home to NoMI, a restaurant that isn't exactly White Castle or Old Country Buffet. Britt unsurprisingly stuffs the set with lush downtempo tracks that are bathed in soul, all the while maintaining his balance on a dangerously thin beam. This is ultratasteful stuff, which Britt has always been known for supporting, but none of it is certifiably innocuous -- a trait that most music of this ilk suffers from. Britt takes the opportunity to showcase some of the upcoming releases on his FiveSix label and also throws in some exclusives. Highlights: Spacek's exclusive "Peep Live Show," Sa-Ra's ...

| | Billy Joel 52ND Street/An Innocent Man CDs (2008)
Las Puertas Del Infierno
$12.39 One always has to wonder why any label simply repackages two albums in a slipcase, shrink wraps them, and ships them out. There is no price break, no remastering job, no bonus material, nothing. But it must work because all the majors do it in one form or another. Here are two of Billy Joel's best-known recordings, 52nd Street and An Innocent Man, in a rather ugly slipcase. Thankfully, the two CDs keep their own packages so you can toss it in the recycling bin. But if you were a Joel fan, why would you buy these again? If you are simply getting into the man, while these are both truly fine ...
