Elvis Presley/The Million Dollar Quartet: Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins .
One year after leaving Sun for the more lucrative pastures of RCA Records, Elvis Presley returned to his first record label to attend a Carl Perkins recording session. Newcomer Jerry Lee Lewis was there adding piano to Perkins' new single, "Matchbox," and Johnny Cash dropped by when Sun owner Sam Phillips alerted Cash to the incredible photo-op taking place. A local newspaper took snapshots and dubbed the group The Million Dollar Quartet. All but Cash stuck around for a prolonged jam session, the results of which are contained on the extraordinary MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET, which captures Perkins, Lewis, and Presley rollicking through an astonishingly eclectic mix of gospel, county, and rhythm and blues, thereby neatly encapsulating the roots of rock and roll.
RCA's release of these essential tapes vastly improves on the sound quality of the widely circulated bootlegs of the session.
Recorded at Sun Studios, Memphis, Tennesse on December 4, 1956.
