Originally released in 2000, DUMBING UP was reissued in 2006 (in a package with a DVD of the group's videos). As always, Karl Wallinger (the band is essentially Wallinger's one-man project) is deeply steeped in the sounds of the 1960s, referencing Neil Young ("What Does It Mean Now?"), Crosby, Stills & Nash ("Til I Got You"), Bob Dylan ("Who Are You"), and the Beatles ("Another Thousand Years"). While Wallinger won't win any prizes for reinventing the wheel, his skills as a songwriter and builder of pop soundscapes are thoroughly winning, making DUMBING UP a fun, engaging listen from back to front.

This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
With DEBUT, the Icelandic thrush Bjork Godmundsdottir (late of the Sugarcubes) brings her knowing innocence and quirky voice to bear on an engaging program of renegade pop tunes. The unusual instrumental textures on songs such as "Human Behavior," fleshed out with timpani, small percussion instruments, vibraphones and harps, suggests a post-modern version of Phil Spector.
As a singer, Bjork's swooping octave leaps and guttural cries betray the elemental contradictions in her music. She projects the girlish innocence and barely constrained sensuality of a wise child, old beyond her years (the techno-reggae romanticism of "Venus As A Boy," the bouncy house changes of "Big Time Sensuality" and "Violently Happy"), and sometimes she sounds like she's trying to rediscover how such doe-eyed love might actually feel, as if for the first time (the mysterious groove of "One Day" and the jazzy standard "Like Someone In Love," with its spare harp accompaniment).

My name is Lynn Matthew Stokes. I was born in the city of blues St. Louis, Mo. Spending my twenties in Austin Texas in the 1970’s allowed me to experience and witness a wide variety of exceptional musicians and musical trends; from the Cosmic Cowboy country and western scare of Waylon, Willie and the boys, to the electric blues revival of the Vaughan brothers. Concentrating mainly as a guitar player led me to playing with a variety of bands and musical styles throughout my career and working with talented songwriters who’s songwriting crafts did not go unnoticed. One of the highlights of those days was opening for Bob Dylan in 1991 in front of 5000 people and getting great revues in the music press.In 2001 while researching my family’s Scottish and English heritage I came across a body of songs which captivated me to the point where I decided I had to record and perform them. The CD is titled Off To Sea Once More. The songs are ballads and Sea “Shanties” some of which date back several hundred years. The melodies are haunting, their rhythms suggesting the bobbing of the tall sail ships, and their lyrics tell the colorful stories of the joys and hardships of the men whose lives were dependent on the world’s oceans.
