Originally released in 2000, DUMBING UP was reissued in 2006 (in a package with a DVD of the group's videos). As always, Karl Wallinger (the band is essentially Wallinger's one-man project) is deeply steeped in the sounds of the 1960s, referencing Neil Young ("What Does It Mean Now?"), Crosby, Stills & Nash ("Til I Got You"), Bob Dylan ("Who Are You"), and the Beatles ("Another Thousand Years"). While Wallinger won't win any prizes for reinventing the wheel, his skills as a songwriter and builder of pop soundscapes are thoroughly winning, making DUMBING UP a fun, engaging listen from back to front.
This CD/DVD combination features a limited edition bonus DVD featuring almost three hours of all that is World Party: rare music videos, archival footage, live and studio performances, skits, hijinks and more. The CD features 12 recent hits.
Better than Ever Karl Wallinger returns with World Party and continues his melodic examination of modern-day society on a CD more reminiscent of some of his earlier and best works. Truly, "Dumbing Up" has some extraordinary songs on it and Wallinger's musical craftmanship and perfectionist attitude shine through on tracks like "Here Comes The Future", as catchy as anything he's ever written. Ballads have always been Wallinger's strong suit and he continues the trend with "Always On My Mind", this album's magnum opus.
If "Dumbing Up" is any indication, I'm hoping we see more prolific work from World Party in the coming years. Submitted by a reviewer (Los Angeles, CA) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo This review is for a different format.
Gotta Love World Party If you like World Party & the music of Karl Wallinger then you will enjoy "Dumbing Up."
If you're not familiar with the music then you need to give it a listen. Great stuff! It's probably too mild for teenagers but "mature" folks with discriminating taste will be impressed. Submitted by a reviewer (Indianapolis, IN) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo This review is for a different format.
