The web is all abuzz. After a year of selling their The Passage album at gigs and via their website, Boy Hits Car finally struck a deal with Rock Ridge Music to give the set a "proper" release. Then out came the worrywarts, concerned because the sleeve notes explain that Passage is a concept album, and thus presumably damning the CD to airwave oblivion. Guess these moaning minnies are too young to remember Tommy or Quadrophenia. Just because the set has an over-riding theme of exploring life's journey doesn't mean that the individual songs can't stand on their own. The glorious "Everything" certainly does, its rousing, sweeping melody and singalong chorus could easily be spun onto 45. The lovely acoustic-laced ballad, "This Song for You," is made for late-night airplay, the heavy-hitting "These Burning Memories" and "Tonight" for hard rock stations, and "Escape the World" could work there or during emo slot on an alt-rock station. Of course, not everything is appropriate for airplay, this is an album after all. The graceful "Windswept" is too "folky" in feel for American radio, but it's still a wonderful song. And really that's the marvelous thing about this album, although all the songs further the theme, they organically work on their own terms both musically and lyrically. But taken as a whole, it's even better, as the set sweeps across diverse moods and styles, and after one finally digests all the varied musical experiences, there's still the thematic concept to ponder. The Passage is indeed an epiphany of a set, and a revelation for fans, and by far the group's most stunning album to date. ~ Jo-Ann Greene
Made up of childhood friends CRegg Rondell (Vocals & Acoustic 12 String Guitar), Louis Lenard (Guitar), Scott Menville (Bass), and new found drummer Johnny Ransom, former Wind-UP Records recording artists BOY HITS CAR are known for playing the sickest, loveliest, ugliest, prettiest, most beautiful, melodic, heartfelt music that the band dubs "LoveCore". Their self-titled debut album was released in 2001 and included the hit single "I'm a Cloud." These Los Angeles natives have toured with System of a Down, Incubus, and Papa Roach to name a few, and were featured on the 2001 SnoCore Tour. Haven gained a reputation of having one of the most powerful and captivating live shows, the boys have also made their way through Europe on their own headlining tours and played main stage slots on European festivals such as Reading and Leeds in England and Germany's Rock Am Rink and Rock Im Park. Their new album, "The Passage" is available now. Passage album
$13.65 Perhaps no other guitarists in the metal genre has been as influenced by Yngwie Malmsteen as Symphony X leader Michael Romeo. That has proved to be both a blessing and a curse for this gifted guitarist. His chops are certainly comparable, but his sound and style are often identical to his idol. Therein lies the problem with this recording and, for that matter, most of the post-Malmsteen shredders. Some of the music and themes here are all too familiar, as is Russell Allen's macho vocal style. This is not meant to imply that the music here is not ...
| | Evergrey Recreation Day CD (2003) Limited Edition
Passage CD music
$15.39 Sweden's Evergrey figure among a rare breed of progressive metal bands capable of balancing their undeniably impressive musicianship and lofty song and lyric-writing ambitions with the commitment to serving a song's best interest, not their own individual instrumental prowess. More unique yet is their heavy reliance on power metal -- often the most predictable and repetitive of metal subgenres -- for much of their sonic imprint, as they effortlessly integrate its best elements into their inventive compositions. Arguably their most consistent and rewarding to date, the group's stellar fourth album Recreation Day fleshes out what few forced experiments had tarnished earlier works into a strong and cohesive set from start to finish. Singer/guitarist Tom Englund wisely eschews the operatic excesses employed by many of his peers, both in the progressive and power metal fields; yet his range is quite impressive, ranging from delicately emotive melodies (particularly on the beautiful "Madness Caught Another Victim") ...
| | Armor For Sleep What To Do When You Are Dead CD (2005)
Passage music CDs
$9.22 Initial pressings Of WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR DEAD include(d) Limited Edition bonus DVD.
Among emo fans, it's all about which band can best touch the heart, engage the head, and rock the body in equal measure. Armor for Sleep has been one of the most successful on all three counts, regularly performing to gaggles of sweaty kids who sing along with every word. Of course, with lines like "Give me your hand; I'll shake it...and smile until my face falls off my head," this is no mean feat. Though, on the surface, the group's radio-friendly take on the "smart-punk" genre may appear to have something in common with pop-punk jesters Blink 182, Armor for Sleep's lyrics repeatedly explore themes of loneliness, death, and existential angst.
Sonically, the ensemble is a bit more straightforward than some of its contemporaries, sticking with tried-and-true ...
| | Mullmuzzler Elements Of Persuasion CD (2005)
Passage songs
$15.29 Clichés have a way of being overused, but some of them are so darn accurate that it's hard not to come back to them again and again. One such cliché is, "The more things change, the more they stay the same." That cliché applies to politics and economics, and it most certainly applies to music; James LaBrie's third solo project, Elements of Persuasion, is a perfect example. This 2005 release worships, cherishes and adores rock's past without being totally enslaved by it, and like a lot of the neo-soulsters who have managed to link the '60s and '70s with the '90s and 2000s (Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, among others), LaBrie has no problem drawing on different eras for inspiration. But the Dream Theater vocalist has nothing to do with R&B; his turf is hard rock, metal and progressive rock, and Elements of Persuasion is an album with both pre-Nevermind and post-Nevermind components. There is no getting around the abundance of '70s and '80s influences that assert themselves on this disc -- influences ranging from Ronnie James Dio, Judas Priest and Queensrÿche to the elaborate progressive rock of Yes, Kansas and Rush. But instead of being totally retro, Elements of Persuasion also draws on the chug-chug riffs and downtuned guitars of alternative rock metal, grunge and post-grunge; this is a CD that can make you think of Geddy Lee or Rob Halford one minute, ...
| | Story Of The Year In The Wake Of Determination CD (2005)
Passage album
$15.79 Marsala contemplates the group's achievements on "Five Against the World," and takes on macho posturing with "Jarhead," while "March of the Dead" focuses on societal apathy. Whatever Story of the Year's lyrical message may be, the music is always unapologetically fierce, highlighting the blistering and often intricate guitar lines of Ryan Phillips and Philip Sneed. While many of their peers mine a similar sound, Story of the Year is one of the finest acts in the hardcore-influenced heavy-rock ...
| | Kings Of Leon Only By The Night CD (2008)
Passage CD music
$10.49 With their raw, organic sound, Tennessee's Kings of Leon emerged in 2003 as Southern rock for the indie-garage set, sort of a Strokes for the South. While there were hints of a new direction on their third album, BECAUSE OF THE TIMES, its follow-up, ONLY BY THE NIGHT, follows through with a near-reinvention of the Kings' sound. ONLY BY THE NIGHT could be mistaken ...
