| | Soul 2 Soul V.4: Classic Singles 88-93 CD (1998) (Import) England
Lord Jamar's: The Five Percent Album
$13.15 British producer Jazzie B. teamed up with fellow record maker Nellee Hooper and together they created the group Soul II Soul. The group quickly found themselves churning out hit records, first for the U.K. dance floor and later for the world, thanks largely to the ubiquitous 1989 hit "Back to Life." VOLUME IV - THE CLASSIC SINGLES 88-93 could rightly be called their most essential package, as singles were certainly the outfit's strong suit. Soul II Soul was aided greatly on a number of songs--including "Back to Life," "Keep on Movin,'" and the early hit "Fairplay"--by the hypnotic smoothed-out vocals of singer Caron Wheeler, whose departure after the first album ensured that the group's debut would also be their commercial peak. A critical and commercial success at a time when a new brand of underground black club music was making its way onto mainstream radio, this collection provides cultural relevance while retaining its stellar pop appeal.

| | Bebe Winans Live And Up Close CD (2002)
Lord Jamar's: The Five Percent Album
$12.65 LIVE AND UP CLOSE was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album.
Whether recording as part of the Winans group or with CeCe Winans as a duet, BeBe Winans has proven eminently capable of playing his role well in collaborations, but it's on his own that the contemporary gospel star truly displays all the multiple facets of his musical personality. BEBE LIVE AND UP CLOSE, as the title implies, offers as good a look at what makes BeBe's music tick as you're likely to get. There's the mellow, balladic, pop-tinged tones of "I Feel in Love With God," the churning gospel soul of "Love & Freedom," the very modern-sounding, synth-flavored R&B of the opening cut "Do You Know Him," and more. Winans even finds a way to give a fresh delivery to an old gospel warhorse like "Amazing Grace," making the listener feel as if they're hearing the old chestnut for the first time. That's the kind of gift that Winans possesses, and LIVE AND UP CLOSE affords the opportunity to witness the singer's magic in action.

| | Donovan What's Bin Did And What's Bin Hid CD (1965)
Lord Jamar's: The Five Percent Album
$10.89 The Donovan most people are familiar with is the cosmic flower child who gave us such hits as "Sunshine Superman" and "Mellow Yellow." But in 1965, Donovan's music was in a much different stage of development. As heard on his first full-length album WHAT'S BIN DID AND WHAT'S BIN DID, Donovan's early sound was a very basic folk-revival approach heavily influenced by the likes of Woody Guthrie (whose "Car Car" is here), Ramblin' Jack Elliott (who had became something of a cult figure in the UK), and of course, Bob Dylan, to whom the young Donovan was compared ad nauseam by the British ...
