Prog metal supergroup O.S.I. return with their second album, which finds the duo of singer and keyboardist Kevin Moore and guitarist Jim Matheos moving away from the fairly standard-issue epic metal of 2003's Office of Strategic Influence into something that sounds more like Evanescence's gothy metal-pop crossed with late-era Radiohead's fondness for electronic interference. Moore, formerly of Dream Theater (his ex-bandmate Mike Portnoy plays the album's few non-electronic drums), and Fates Warning leader Matheos are venturing into relatively new territory here: Free is downright commercial in a way that none of the duo's previous projects have been. Moore sings with a new, less aggressive voice that's unfortunately reminiscent of any number of faceless alternative rock singers, and Matheos' guitar is downplayed in favor of keyboards and sequencers. Even on "All Gone Now," which has the most overtly metallic riffs on the album, the guitar is overpowered by layers of twitchy electronic cut-up rhythms and twinkling keyboards. The songs are catchy enough that it's not unthinkable that unadventurous rock radio programmers could take a shine to the title track or "Go," but Fates Warning and Dream Theater fans might be less impressed. [There is a special edition featuring a bonus CD with six otherwise unavailable tracks.] ~ Stewart Mason

| Free Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews OSI great CD Outstanding CD...Great Prog Rock music.. Submitted by jdabek4 (Sewell, NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Not as good as their first, but good. I loved the original OSI release, so I took a chance and bought this one...glad I did. This one has a more of an industrial style to it that packs more of a punch, where as the first one is a bit more laid back. Good stuff!! If you're into porcupine tree, dream theater or chroma key, or if you're simply one to recognize and appreciate musical talent...i'd recommend it. OSI tops itself! I have to agree with so many of the reviewers here, I think this is an underrated GEM! What an album! While I liked the first OSI, this one is simply better overall mainly because of the songs. Each song has its own identity, which is awesome. When you first go through the cd you may think nothing really jumps out at you and you don't seem floored, but after several listens and months go by you will not forget this cd. I have had it since it came out and only now am I really appreciating its value. Now when I play the cd and the first few seconds of a song are played, I start drooling knowing which song is about to be played. To me the whole cd is superb, however absolute standouts are "Free", "All Gone Now", "Bigger Wave", and "Better". These are all great modern rock tracks, it is a shame the music industry is the way it is or else these songs would be on the airwaves for people to enjoy. The song "Free" has one of the most amazing sections of music I have ever heard, people who have heard it will know which part I mean. Jim Matheos plays one of the meanest riffs which is accompanied by some unique Mike Portnoy fills which he places beautifully (as always). Add to that Moore's lyrics and unique vocal approach and you have a masterpiece of a song. Simple by prog terms but so effective. Just awesome. I would love to see Dream Theater write a song in this vein, and just blow us away in 4 minutes. Anyway I just want to say that this combination of Moore, Matheos and Portnoy is a godsend, they can do no wrong. Anything put on a cd from OSI, Fates Warning, Dream Theater, and Neal Morse is absolute GOLD. These 10 or 15 musicians are the greatest of our time. Without them I would not even listen to music any more. Here's to many more masterpieces! OSI is AWESOME!!! Submitted by biaxident2 (Toronto) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$18.99 Songs of praise UK ArtistShe was a nurse for 30 years, took part in aid mission in Africa, and is a reverend. Now Paulina odongo has release her first CD, and sheâs told reporter JANE HARRISON all about it When gospel singer Paulina odongo was inspired to follow the voice of the lord, she realised she had found the perfect way to reach people.Inspired by Godâs words, she could put her own to song fulfilling both her ambitions to join the ministry and word of music. The mother of two who has been singing since the age of six, becoming a reverend since 1990 and has just brought out her first gospel CD: listen, the spirit is calling. I have always admired people like Ella Fitzgerald and the Bill Gaither gospel trio. I have chosen one of the trioâs songs because it has such a fantastic harmony.I play the CD in our church and people say it has helped them spiritually and emotionally. One work colleague said it was like honey. This was something I told my mother I always wanted to do and Iâm sure she would have been really pleased Her career combination is no surprise as she had already mapped out her path when asked to write an essay for the future at schoolShe recalls âI said I would become a Christian and a youth leader, go to Africa as a missionary â and defiantly sing.â, after arriving here from Trinidad and Tobago with her two sisters in 1966 to join their parentsPaulina had Brian ferry as an art teacher at the Mary boom school in Hammersmith â she remembers he always wore black â and then she became a nurse for 30years and now a health and social care lecturer.Paulina first started going to church as a youth teenager, ostensibly looking for something to do. âI wanted to see what was going on because I met a woman in the street and she talked about childrenâs activities,â she explainedâI found my own age group. It was great. We went to the seaside a lot but they also encourage you to use your talents and mine was singing.âPaulina had already sung at school concerts and outside events. Her first song was Hey big spender at a school concert at the age of 15. She says: âit was very scary singing in front of the whole school but i enjoyed it. I remember singing in the West Indies at carnival ...
