| | Bob Marley No Sympathy CD Bob Marley Discography of CDs
The tracks Bob Marley and the Wailers cut with legendary reggae producer Lee Perry in Jamaica in the late 1960s and early '70s are sadly less well-known than the group's later discography. However, Marley fans have cause for celebration, as this set packs 16 of the reggae legend's early songs into one convenient package. This music offers such a unique stylistic blend of reggae's rock-steady rhythm and slinkier R&B elements that it still sounds fresh some 30 years after its creation. Marley's songwriting is as strong as ever, while on "Soul Rebel," "Try Me," and "My Cup," his textured, soulful voice infuses the songs with characteristic passion, delivering hook-filled melodic lines over irresistibly groovy beats.
Late 60s and early 70s Marley and the Wailers tracks produced by Lee "Scratch" Perry. Tougher and more organic than their later Island albums.

No Sympathy album
$12.15 Recorded between 1969 & 1999. Includes liner notes by Mike Ragogna & Dana Smart.
Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (1999, MCA Music Media Studios, North Hollywood, California).
Not a career-spanning overview, as opening number "Wonderful World, Beautiful People" dates from 1969, seven years into Jimmy Cliff's career, but this is an excellent trawl through his past nonetheless. Ultimate Collection should really have kicked off with "Waterfall," his first international hit (number one in Brazil), but "World" brought him success in the both in the U.K. and U.S., and apparently that's all that counts. Nevertheless, the set follows the reggae star down the years, through hit singles and across crucial album tracks, and bringing it all bang up to date with "Rise Up," a number from Cliff's 1999 Humanitarian album. However, there's one yawning gap -- 1982 to 1988, when Cliff was signed ...

| | Bob Marley Catch A Fire: Deluxe Edition CDs (1973) Remastered; Deluxe Edition
No Sympathy music CDs
$19.59 It is nearly impossible to imagine a time when reggae was not part of the cultural currency. Though Bob Marley and the Wailers cannot be said to have invented the style, they certainly brought it to the world stage, and this album was the torch that lit the way. CATCH A FIRE hit with the force of a revelation when it was released in 1973, and though Chris Blackwell tailored its sound with a rock audience in mind, the album was still unlike anything that had ever come down the pike. Ironically, even given its relatively full production and electric guitar solos, CATCH A FIRE sounds more organic and rootsy than any of the Wailers' subsequent releases.
While the percolating rhythms and burbling bass lines of the Barrett brothers, and the sweet, impeccable harmonies of Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer soothe and move, CATCH A FIRE also introduces the conscious, politically minded themes that would remain at the center of Marley's songwriting for the rest of his career. "Concrete Jungle," one of the towering standout tracks, addresses the trap of inner ...

No Sympathy songs
$10.19 African-American R&B has affected different reggae artists in different ways. While Toots and the Maytals' gritty ska/reggae is comparable to the raw, tough southern soul that Wilson Picket, Sam & Dave and Otis Redding were known for, Culture's sweet, mellifluous style of reggae is closer to the northern soul and sweet soul that came out of Chicago, Philadelphia and Detroit in the '60s and '70s. On International Herb, ones hears a lot of northern soul influence, ...
| | Paul Kossoff Kossoff/Kirke/Tetsu/Rabbit CD (2007)
No Sympathy album
$13.85 Unsurprisingly, this quartet sounds uncannily like Free and its English descendant Bad Company. Drummer Simon Kirke was in both bands. Guitarist Paul Kossoff, bassist Tetsu Yamauchi, and keyboardist John "Rabbit" Bundrick were in Free, although the latter two appeared only in the band's ragged, ...
