| | Scorpions No. 1'S CD Scorpions Discography of CDs
While the Scorpions have certainly had enough radio and MTV hits over the years to warrant an expansive "best-of" set (or in their case, countless "best-of" sets), to title such a collection of their's No. 1's is a bit of a headscratcher. And all because of one, teeny tiny reason -- the group hasn't scored numerous number one hits anywhere in the world (let alone 32 of 'em, which is how many selections are included here). But if you're willing to overlook that marketing flaw and you're on the hunt for a double-disc set of the group's more mainstream material, then 2006's No. 1's contains many Scorpions favorites. As expected, you'll find radio-ready rockers ("Rock You Like a Hurricane," "No One Like You," "Rhythm of Love"), as well as power ballad tear-jerkers ("Still Loving You," "Holiday," "Wind of Change"), plus lesser-known tracks ("Loving You Sunday Morning," "Coast to Coast," "Alien Nation"). But with there not being one single bloody track from the group's '70s output included (which was when the Scorpions were truly at their metallic peak), No. 1's is not one of the more comprehensive collections of these German rockers out there. ~ Greg Prato
Stunning import only 32-track 24-bit digitally remastered two CD set featuring all the biggest hits by this German hard rock outfit. Although they achieved international success in the '80s during the early years of MTV, they originally formed in 1969 and achieved success in their homeland a decade before breaking through in America and elsewhere. Includes 'Rock You Like A Hurricane', 'Winds Of Change', 'Still Loving You', 'Big City Night' and many more. More than any other Scorpions compilation on the market, No. 1's is the best of the best and the perfect introduction to the band's vast repertoire. EMI. 2006. No. 1'S Review

| | Dream Theater When Dream & Day Unite CD (1989) Germany; Originally Released in 1989
No. 1'S songs
$13.95 WHEN DREAM & DAY UNITE, the major label debut from prog-metal act Dream Theater, includes the tracks "YTSE Jam" and "Only A Matter Of Time."
Dream Theater's first official release gave an indication that this was a talented band that combined the styles of Yes, Rush, and Queensr˙che. The latter seemed to be too big of an influence at this stage of their career. Vocalist Charlie Dominici's voice is not powerful enough to carry out the band's otherwise convincing intensity, and his attempt to sound like Queensr˙che's Geoff Tate was unsuccessful. The music here is not as heavy as it would become in the '90s but could still be classified as progressive metal. Guitarist John Petrucci and drummer Mike Portnoy established themselves as competent musicians, but their individual styles were not yet refined. The band's originality does shine through on "Light Fuse and Get Away," "The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun," and "Only a Matter of Time." The odd-meter measures and numerous time ...

| | Very Best Of Sue Thompson CD (2003) Remastered
No. 1'S songs
$11.75 Sue Thompson had two distinct phases in her career: the first as a teen pop vocalist, singing light, cutesy tunes (often written by John D. Loudermilk) perfect for a prom, the second as a lush country crooner, singing songs for housewives. Since Thompson had a thin, light voice, it was perfectly suited for the pop material, but tended to cut against the burnished countrypolitan productions, which is why her duets with Don Gibson work so well -- she provides a good counterpoint to his rich, warm voice. It can't quite be said that the teen pop and country-pop material function as good counterpoints to each other on Varese's 2003 collection The Very Best of Sue Thompson, however. They have very different tones and they're not complimentary. Nevertheless, this approach does mean that it has nearly all of Thompson's hits from throughout her career -- the few that are missing scraped the bottom of the charts -- and therefore provides a thorough retrospective (the only collection to come close to The Very Best of Sue Thompson is Collectables' 1995 release Golden Classics, which contained two more songs, but wasn't as well-produced and nicely assembled as this). But country fans take note: Although the back cover touts that all songs were produced by Wesley Rose, a good 11 songs are all trifling, lightweight pop and the five country tunes are pleasantly generic, mainstream, early-'70s country. Finally, it has to be said that a little of Thompson's light, nasal voice goes a long, long way, particularly when it's squeaking out silly, cutesy, contrived teen novelties. That's ...
| | Kiss CD (1974)
No. 1'S album
$19.79 Kiss' penchant for make-up was inspired by their downtown New York neighbors the New York Dolls and by Alice Cooper, who was on top of the glam-rock world when Kiss' self-titled debut came out in 1974. Rather than dress in drag as the Dolls did, Kiss fashioned their look on a mix of sci-fi and horror films, and the rock & roll of their youth. They fashioned their music on willful hard-rock arrogance. Several songs on KISS became staples in the group's catalog. "Strutter," about a beautiful woman with a confident swagger, mirrored the attitude of the band, and it contained the first of many incendiary Ace Frehley solos.
The album also contains "Cold Gin," Ace's signature song; "Deuce," with its quintessential sexual posturing and ...
