Tony Bennett CD music
$17.99 MICHAEL BUBLE MEETS MADISON SQUARE GARDEN finds Canadian crooner Buble making a highly anticipated appearance at the storied New York City concert venue. Buble is at the very least an incredibly talented vocalist who grew from a nice kid singer in the early part of the decade to a truly swinging interpreter of the Great American Songbook canon by its end. Furthermore, he found the right modern pop/soul songs--often ...

Right off the bat, Michael Buble has you in his corner just because you know people have been calling the poor guy "Bubble" all his life (keep that accent on the second syllable, folks). Nomenclature aside, Buble's debut album positions him as something of a Harry Connick, Jr. for the 21st century. His husky croon gives him a bearing beyond his tender years, and in fact his Sinatra-phrased, pop-jazz style bears strong echoes of Connick's singing. Accordingly, the production leans heavily on the updated swing of chestnuts like "Fever" and "Come Fly With Me," but that's only part of the story.
As a modern song stylist, Buble digs into the standards of a more contemporary songbook as well. George Michael's jazzy ballad "Kissing a Ballad" has been a standard-in-waiting for some time, and a version of the Bee Gees' soulful ballad "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" features a guest turn by Barry Gibb himself. And there are worse things ...

| | Jason Laroy Beautiful Tomorrow CD (2006)
Tony Bennett album
$13.95 Acoustic guitar driven rock that's not afraid of a generous serving of distortion, but only when it's called for. Think Dave Matthews speeding down a highway with Kaki King riding shotgun and Ben Harper in the back seat, then slamming into the John Butler Trio, what comes out of the mayhem may just be the closest thing to the music of the Jason LaRoy Band. A Beautiful Tomorrow is the first full length effort from the Jason LaRoy Band which hails from the Denver, Colorado area and is fronted by Jason LaRoy. Originally influenced by more typical styles such as hard rock and metal, his interests have expanded over the years and he now plays music from a myriad of genres. During the late 1990's he achieved a significant level of success in the music industry with a band called The Quiet Room, who were signed to Metal Blade Records and sold thousands of discs world wide, touring internationally. Though much of his creative effort has been devoted to rock and metal, he has always had a fascination with acoustic music and its more natural, intimate feel. Jason is joined on this release by John Jeffers on drums and Josh Luebbers on electric and upright bass, making this a very powerful trio. The vocals are also delivered by Jason. The vocal style is fairly straight forward and accessible, yet occasionally dark and subtly sarcastic. The lyrics can be best described as introspective, personal and on some tracks even political, for the most part firmly footed in reality, yet not afraid to wonder what if!His playing of acoustic guitar is somewhat unorthodox in that he plays many of his songs using both hands on the fret board. He calls it his slap/tap technique but has also referred to it as the anything goes technique. Of this technique he says, "I don't believe that there is one right way to approach playing the guitar." This is not to say that Jason hasn't studied traditional playing. In fact he has spent many years studying various styles of playing, including jazz, classical, blues, and rock. He also teaches guitar to students of all ages and abilities. While grounded in traditional theory and technique, Jason's approach to the guitar is more direct and intuitive. "There are just too many guitarists that are hindered by what they perceive as the correct way to play." This theory is put into practice when he plays live. It is just as likely that he'll be thumping the guitar like a drum, or slapping and popping the strings like a bass as strumming a chord. Of his influences he says "I have drawn from many different styles to create my own style. I love music in general and refuse to neglect any piece of music based on the genre in which it falls. ' I once heard a prominent producer say that people spend too much time ...

Tony Bennett album
$10.69 2007 album debut from the Canadian identical twins with voices of angels. The young men are so similar in look and sound that it's often difficult to pinpoint exactly which brother is singing a particular part. The album was produced by Steve Anderson (Kylie Minogue’s long-term musical collaborator), mixed by Ren Swan (Il Divo/KT Tunstall) and recorded in a private London recording studio owned by Grammy winning songwriter Terry Britten (Tina Turner's “What's Love Got To Do With It”). With a vintage Neve sound console once used by Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles and a microphone used by Frank Sinatra, the album combines Pro Tools technology and vintage recording equipment to beautifully create the rich orchestra accompaniment required for RyanDan's unique voices. The emotion with which they sing is undeniable and clearly evident during the recording process of this album. Universal. 2007.
Universal Music is one of the leaders in the field of classical crossover music, and when the label was looking for something slightly different to release, an obvious choice was RyanDan, an album by the Kowarsky brothers, Canadian identical twins named after their first names, Ryan and Dan. After all, being twins, there would obviously be no problem with the blending of voices and harmony, and on their debut album, there certainly wasn't. But the album RyanDan wasn't just about the vocals -- after all, with a plethora of artists in this genre, there had to be something different. In fact, it was hardly a classical crossover album at all, but rather an album of 12 well-sung songs, with importance given to the backing as well as the choice of repertoire. The first half of the album was filled with original songs, including the beautiful Judie Tzuke-written ballad "High," the almost religious "The Prayer," and "In Us I Believe," but the second half included more cover versions of the type that have appeared on many an album: "Wind Beneath My Wings," "I'll Be There," and "Bring Him Home" from Les Miserables (which was most definitely a solo song rather than a duet). Rather strangely, the album started off well, looking good as it hit number seven on its first week on the charts, but it very quickly nosedived and disappeared totally just two weeks later, despite getting near to ...
