Recorded intermittently over the course of seven years, ALL THE ROADRUNNING is the collaborative project between Dire Straits guitarist and vocalist Mark Knopfler and country music luminary Emmylou Harris. While Knopfler's bluesy slow-hand picking and minimalist, muttering vocals may seem an odd match for Harris's lush, full-throated soprano, the pairing works remarkably well.
Better still is the songwriting, with the breezy back-porch opener "Beachcombing" and the stately 9/11-themed "If This Is Goodbye" among the highlights. As always, Knopfler's fluid guitar style is engaging, and it adds a shadowy, atmospheric backdrop to the roots-conscious proceedings. On the surface, ALL THE ROADRUNNING is a quiet and unassuming record, but its subtlety and grace are part of its lasting charm.

Rolling Stone (p.57) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[B]allads like the title track and the Springsteen-esque 'Beyond My Wildest Dreams' are world-wise and gently gorgeous." Entertainment Weekly (p.73) - "[T]he tension between their vocal personas -- she's ever hopeful, he's relentlessly glum -- is the highlight of ALL THE ROADRUNNING." -- Grade: B- Uncut (p.126) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "When Harris is upfront -- as on the wonderfully delicate 'Rollin' On' or 'Love And Happiness' -- it's sublime, emotive stuff." Dirty Linen (p.49) - "When it comes to artistic integrity, commercial appeal, and sheer transcendency, it doesn't get much better than this." No Depression (p.125) - "[A] remarkably cohesive album...sonically every track here sounds like it belongs..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.98) - 3 stars out of 5 --- "[W]hen translating his trademark languorous picaresques into his'n'hers arrangements the result is a series of ordinary life duets that...suggest moments of sun-setting harmony at the end of tired lives. M.Knopfler "Getting Better All The Time" MK a creative force, not afraid to take chances. Song writing beyond reproach. The vocal style of Emylou makes the collection all the more compelling. The man is a visionary talent. As usual quality of recording and level of talent of the players absolutely top notch, but that is what you expect from him. Buy it, it only gets better after repeat listenings. Submitted by GDcactus (Woodstock, GA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Good, not great An interesting album, but it does wear thin after a while. Harris still has a strong voice, but some of the songs lack energy. Submitted by Tom (NY, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

All The Roadrunning album
$9.29 Mark Knopfler's first excursions outside of Dire Straits were film soundtracks, where his guitar mastery served him well. Starting in the mid-1990s, he embarked on a proper post-Straits solo career. By the time of 2004's SHANGRI-LA, Knopfler had almost entirely left behind the expansive instrumental textures of his former band in favor of a more straight-ahead singer/songwriter approach, which works wonderfully here. Knopfler keeps things low-key throughout most of SHANGRI-LA, with quietly intoned, often drolly sardonic lyrics, supple finger-picked guitar lines, and songs full of subtly crafted surprises.
There's a wealth of unusual topics on offer here; "Boom, Like That" is a first-person monologue by Knopfler in the voice of Ray Kroc, the man behind the ...
| | Van Morrison Pay The Devil CD (2006)
All The Roadrunning CD music
$11.49 Over the course of his remarkable career, Van Morrison has ranged so widely across the musical map that it's not exactly a surprise to hear him settling down for a straightforward American roots effort. PAY THE DEVIL, released in 2006 on the Lost Highway label, finds Morrison abandoning any remaining mystical Celtic trappings to tip his hat to the country music of the 1940s and '50s. The arrangements are appropriately spare, with fiddle, steel and acoustic guitar, bass, and drums propping up most of the songs, while strings and backing vocals flesh things out on occasion.
There are three Morrison originals and a handful of songs popularized by Hank Williams ("Your Cheatin' Heart" and ...
| | Bruce Springsteen We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions CD (2006) DualDisc
All The Roadrunning music CDs
$15.85 This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
Bruce Springsteen is certainly no stranger to acoustic-based, folk-inspired music. He began his career as a post-Dylan troubadour, and he's been making "unplugged" albums as far back as 1982's NEBRASKA. He's already recorded Woody Guthrie material, so it's not a shock that he would release a tribute album to folk icon Pete Seeger. WE SHALL OVERCOME: THE SEEGER SESSIONS celebrates not just Seeger's musical influence, of course, but also the political stands the singer took, which ...
| | J J Cale The Road To Escondido CD (2006)
All The Roadrunning songs
$15.65 J.J. Cale is perhaps best known for penning hits for Eric Clapton, including "Cocaine" and "Midnight Hour," yet he's also an accomplished and extremely talented songwriter and guitarist. While no one ever declared, "Cale is God," Clapton clearly has always thought highly of him, and in 2006, the Clapton/Cale mutual admiration society finally made its way into the studio.
The result is 14 songs' worth of the relaxed blues hybrid that Cale built his career around and that earned Clapton the nickname '"Slowhand." The duo produced all the tracks and wrote the majority of them, with some help from guests such as Taj Mahal, Derek Trucks, the late Billy Preston, and John Mayer, who wrote the song "Hard to Thrill" for the album. THE ROAD TO ESCONDIDO is a mellow musical good time between friends, and for ...
