Hide Description Christian McBride Live At Tonic Songs Live At Tonic Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Awesome concert!!! Pure jazz-funk! I knew a couple of Christian´s solo albums before I heard this one. The nice thing is that this is not an usual live record, but it is a jam session type of concert. Part of the songs are improvisation around a key tone, but even though it is a record that is very easy to listen to, all the time. The great guitar player Charlie Hunter plays on one of the records.
100% funk! Don´t think twice...Buy it! Submitted by Eduardo Giancristofaro (Sao Paulo, Brasil) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Yeah, but... Though I really like McBride, I must admit, this record kind of bored me about half-way through. If I was at this show, I'm sure I would have been quite impressed and have had the time of my life; however, when one's away from the thrill of the event, it's the songs that remain. After the 1st disc there really aren't any songs, just jams.
Not only am a admirer of McBride, but a major jazz collector, and I must say, sadly, just skip this one! Submitted by St.Davey (Windham, Me.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Live At Tonic album
$15.65 This live set finds jazz ambassador Wynton Marsalis doing what he does best--that is, playing straightforward, bop-inflected jazz with flawless technique. Marsalis pays homage to the masters with versions of Thelonious Monk's "Green Chimneys" and Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee," and offers a lilting, smoky reading of the standard "You Don't Know What Love Is."
There is plenty of stretching out over these six tracks, with superb solos from both Marsalis and alto saxophonist Wessell Anderson, while the tight rhythm section keeps things churning ...
| | Charlie Haden Not In Our Name CD (2005)
Live At Tonic CD music
$15.39 With a cover that directly references bassist Charlie Haden's first recording under his own name, 1969's LIBERATION MUSIC ORCHESTRA, this 2005 album features an updated version of the LMO ensemble. As on the earlier disc, the spirit here is one of peaceful protest; while the former outing was in reaction to the Vietnam War, this record takes the George W. Bush administration to task, especially regarding the war in Iraq.
Pianist Carla Bley is the only returning member of the original LMO. As before, she proves to be a triple threat with her dexterous playing, intuitive conducting, and inventive arrangements. Haden, of course, anchors these tunes (which include his own eclectic title track and a soulful rendition of "Amazing Grace") with his formidable--though never flashy--bass work, allowing the other musicians, particularly guitarist Steve Cardenas and trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, to shine. This is big-band music that can shift with ease from avant-garde passages to swinging melodies, and the talent on hand adds weight to the underlying messages. Although it's difficult to express political outrage with jazz instrumentals, ...
| | Miles Davis Cellar Door Sessions 1970 CDs (2005) Remastered; Box Set; Special Edition
Live At Tonic music CDs
$88.15 Contains previously unreleased material. Some of the recordings on the CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS were originally released in edited form on the 1971 double-LP LIVE EVIL.
There is an entire universe contained in this box. Sumptuously packaged and scrupulously annotated, CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS 1970 is a six-disc set that documents Miles Davis's extended residency at the Washington, D.C., club. Davis is backed by a group of genius musicians: keyboardist Keith Jarrett, drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist Michael Henderson, saxophonist Gary Bartz, percussionist Airto Moreira and guitarist John McLaughlin (who appears only on the last two discs). Together they pioneered an ecstatic fusion of jazz, rock, funk, and abstract sound-painting that established the blueprint for the future of progressive music.
Each disc contains a different live set, and while songs are often repeated across the set lists, no two tracks sound the same. The players improvise at a fever-pitch, pushing themselves to endless invention, and the ensemble's interplay--expressionistic, protean, and fierce--is near telepathic. The influence of rock artists like Sly Stone and Jimi Hendrix can be heard in the layering of deep funk rhythms and psychedelic inflections (especially with Miles's wah-filtered trumpet), but the overall sound seems to subsume and transcend the entire history of 20th century music. In a ...
| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Live At Tonic songs
$13.15 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. Monk, in particular, is a master of tension-and-release tunefulness, creating rhythmic and harmonic intricacies that seem to spur Coltrane's saxophone exploration to new heights.
