Check On It
$11.79 Madonna's EP for RAIN/FEVER features three different versions of the song "Rain," as well as three for the song "Fever," and additional tracks including "Waiting (remix)," "Up Down Suite," "Bad Girl (extended Mix)." "Rain" was the fourth and final U.S. single from Erotica. It never made the Top Ten, but had a relatively long chart life, was a more "friendly" song than the other singles from that album, and became an adult contemporary hit, paving the way for the "softer" Madonna to emerge in the mid-'90s. The single contained four tracks, those being the radio remix and album version of "Rain," a remix of the Erotica album track "Waiting," and a non-album cut, "Up Down Suite." The single version of "Rain" is not drastically different from the longer album version, ...

| | Raekwon Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Pt. II CD (2009)
Check On It
$11.29 Like the original, ONLY BUILT 4 CUBAN LINX, PART 2 sets the stage with the intro, but here, it's some Raekwon history courtesy of Papa Wu. On Part 1 it was fictional dialog introducing a loose concept album. Besides the introductory dialog and the album's look-a-like cover--tinted purple, as if it was a Cash Money, Screwed & Chopped mix of Part 1--the only traits this sequel shares with the original LINX is that it's the Wu-rapper in top form, spitting out rhymes worthy of the Wu logo and pushing his guest list to work harder, as evidenced by Ghostface, Jadakiss, and Cappadonna all sounding at the top of their game. The productions are equally magnificent with Pete Rock, the Alchemist, and even Dr. Dre all living up to their lofty reputations. Inspectah Deck and the Wu's secret weapon Mathematics out RZA the RZA on their 36 CHAMBERS-flavored cuts--the awesome "House of Flying Daggers" and "Mean Streets," respectively--but if it's possible to create a poignant beat track, it has to be the soulful loop on "Ason Jones," ...

| | Evolution Of Robin Thicke CD (2006) Deluxe Edition
Check On It
$10.39 Robin Thicke's 2003 effort, A BEAUTIFUL WORLD, proved the artist was quite adept at spinning a lush pop-R&B hybrid in the blue-eyed soul mode. 2006's THE EVOLUTION OF ROBIN THICKE steps up the achievements of its predecessor, showcasing tighter songwriting and Thicke's versatile vocals (featuring plenty of the artist's lovely falsetto). There are hard-grooving tunes here, and downtempo tracks as well. Thicke works a nice contemporary R&B vibe by judiciously mixing choice old-school elements (Marvin Gaye is a clear touchstone) with electronic flourishes and hip-hop inflections, so that several tracks on THE EVOLUTION sound ready-made ...

Audio Mixers: Claudio Cueni; Douglas Coleman; Mike Caren; Manny Marroquin; Doug Mayhem; Bruce Irvine; Mike Shipley. Liner Note Author: Hua Hsu. Recording information: Chung King Studios, New York, NY (1999-2001); Larrabee North Studios, North Hollywood, CA (1999-2001); Mama Jo's Studios, North Hollywood, CA (1999-2001); Ocean Recording, Burbank, CA (1999-2001); Reflection Sound Studios, Charlotte, NC (1999-2001); Right Track Studios, North Hollywood, CA (1999-2001); Westlake Studios, Hollywood, CA (1999-2001). Photographer: Josh Rothstein. Once 2004's Comin' From Where I'm From began to gather steam, it became common knowledge that Anthony Hamilton was no newcomer. New fans discovered that Hamilton had two other albums in his past. First, there was XTC, an album that was supposed to come out around 1995 but didn't see the light of day due the Uptown label's untimely death; MCA rescued it, released it, and were content with letting it slide into oblivion. Good luck finding a copy. Later on, Hamilton became affiliated with the family-like Soulife label, which disintegrated before he was able to release yet another album. Talk about rotten luck. The appropriately titled Soulife, released by Atlantic/Rhino in 2005, presents ten (and perhaps all) of the songs that were due for release on the album for ...

| | Stackridge Friendliness CD (2007) (Import) Bonus Tracks; England; Remastered; United Kingdom; +4 Bonus Tracks
Check On It
$16.19 2007 issued edition digitally remastered by James Warren and Andy Davis, augmented with 4 additional songs. The difficult second album syndrome did not apply to Stackridge, having chosen to produce their debut album of songs their audience had not heard before back in 1971. When the time came to record "Friendliness" in 1972, they still had a few live favorites in their locker. A month after "Friendliness" was released, when in December 1972 they toured Britain with fellow Bristol band The Pigsty Hill Light Orchestra, Sounds magazine described their shows as "three hours of fun, lust and lunacy".
FRIENDLINESS...PLUS features the 1972 album FRIENDLINESS with extra tracks. Stackridge includes: James Warren, Andy Davis. The early-1970s British band Stackridge took up the mantle of purveyors of musical whimsy to the masses that had been abandoned by the Bonzo Dog Band at the end of the '60s. Their idiosyncratic live show was bolstered by a succession of eccentric yet impeccably realized albums. FRIENDLINESS bridges the gap between '60s Bonzos-inspired lunacy and early-'70s progressive rock with songs like the jazzy "Father Frankenstein Is Behind Your Pillow," the camp, McCartney-esque "Anyone For Tennis," and the exquisite post-psychedelia of "There Is No Refuge." Although The Man in the Bowler Hat is without question the most fully realized and lavishly produced (by George Martin) Stackridge album, most fans of the band would probably gravitate toward Friendliness as their favorite. Here can be found every quality that endeared the West Country five-piece to a loyal -- but never quite large enough -- following. There's Beatlesque melody, gently surreal humor, and considerable instrumental dexterity that ranged freely between the worlds of pop, folk, jazz, classical, and prog rock. The rollicking instrumental "Lummy Days" is a perfect scene-setter, with Mike Evans' violin and Mutter Slater's flute lyrical one moment and bucolic the next as the melody sweeps between hoedown, bolero, and Vaughan Williams -- all in less than four minutes. Next comes the weightless beauty of the title track, with James Warren's choirboy vocals multi-tracked to bewitching effect. That's followed, even more improbably, by the '30-style foppery of "Anyone for Tennis," ...
