An improvement over 1996's TIME FLIES best-of, 2006's GREATEST HITS brings together 21 tracks from 1980s staples Huey Lewis and the News. Anyone who drew air in the '80s, and was within 30 miles of a radio, will recognize the lion's share of tracks here. Whether it be the throwback backbeat of "Heart of Rock & Roll," the sunny, doo-wop-inspired "If This Is It," or the bobbling, new wave groove of "I Want A New Drug," Lewis's breezy brand of commercial pop is long on hooks that sink in and won't let go. The band was reviled by rock fans as sanitized, mainstream pap, but GREATEST HITS, with its stream of smash hits, is an excellent argument for Lewis's staying power.
Huey Lewis & The News: Johnny Colla (vocals, guitar, saxophone); Chris Hayes (vocals, guitars); Sean Hopper (vocals, keyboards); Bill Gibson (vocals, drums); Huey Lewis (vocals, background vocals); Mario Cipollina (bass instrument).
Additional personnel: Stef Burns (vocals, guitars); Rob Sudduth (tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone); Ron Stallings (tenor saxophone); Marvin McFadden (trumpet); John Pierce (bass instrument). Here you go, Elton fans--a definitive two-disc collection of some of the bespectacled one's most beloved tunes. The full gamut of Elton John's stellar career is covered here. The archetypal singer-songwriter introspection of "Your Song" kicks things off, giving way in short order to the more glam pop moments of "Honky Cat" and "Saturday Night's All Right For Fighting." The Roy Orbison-like ...
| | Lionel Richie Definitive Collection CD (2003) Remastered
Greatest Hits
$10.79 The first pressings of THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION included a bonus disc featuring rare tracks.
Although Lionel Richie was AWOL for most of the '90s, he's still a pop culture force to be reckoned with, and THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION ably supports this assertion. Between his work as a frontman for The Commodores, songwriter for other artists, and as a solo act, Richie became the only songwriter to score nine chart-toppers in nine consecutive years. Aside from Kenny Rogers' "Lady" and USA For Africa's "We Are The World," (co-written with Michael Jackson), all the other #1's are here: "Endless Love" (with Diana Ross), "Truly," "Hello," "All Night Long (All Night)," "Say You, Say Me," "Still" and "Three Times A Lady." That's not even counting the man's other Top 10 hits including further Commodores manna like "Easy" (later a hit remake for Faith No More). Throw in solo sides like the infectious "Dancing On the Ceiling" and the urgent "Running With The Night" and its easy to hear how Richie nonchalantly dominating the charts throughout the '80s. He brings things up-to-date with two new songs: the slow rolling Enrique Iglesias duet "To Love a Woman" ...
| | Very Best Of The Eagles CDs (2003) Remastered; Digipak
Greatest Hits
$20.25 THE VERY BEST OF includes a 46-page booklet with pictures and track information.
"Hole In The World" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
The Eagles' founders Don Henley and Glenn Frey were forthright in their desire to bring then-emerging country rock to new heights of commercial success. Formed in Los Angeles in 1971, they learned from their observations of the scene around them, and subsequently took their music to the top of the charts. They stayed there throughout the '70s, becoming synonymous with the sound of Southern California rock.
The band's first hit was with a song by Jackson Browne, and their first album also included a cover of "Ol' 55" by Tom Waits, but the bulk of the material they're known for was penned by Henley and Frey. This two-disc set wisely expands the original VERY BEST OF collection with important album tracks that have also long been band staples and favorites (such as the aforementioned Waits tune and a number of other songs from their pre-platinum first three releases). As is often the common industry-wide practice, there's also a new song, "Hole in the World."
A 2-CD retrospective from the multiplatinum superstars whose 1976 "Greatest Hits" is the #1 album of all time! Special Limited Edition bonus DVD included with a music video, outtakes from the video and backstage pass to Farewell 1.
Initial pressings included a bonus DVD.

| | Very Best Of Jackson Browne CDs (2004) Remastered; Digipak
Greatest Hits
$21.15 Recorded between 1972 & 2002. Includes liner notes by Dave Marsh.
Before this double-disc dose of Jackson Browne's best came along, the influential troubadour's most extensive career summary was the 15-song THE NEXT VOICE YOU HEAR. This truly definitive anthology contains just about everything on that disc and plenty more. Browne helped define the 1970s singer/songwriter idiom, and that process is carefully documented here, as on the precociously world-weary "These Days" and the soulful, Van Morrison-like "Doctor My Eyes." The collection follows Browne through the years, as he toughens up his sound with more of a rock edge ("Running on Empty," "Boulevard") and adds a sociopolitical edge to his lyrics ("Lives in the Balance," "I am a Patriot"). Through it all, Jackson's humanity and humility, not to mention his lyrical song-craft, shine with an enviable consistency.

| | Alexis Korner Kornerstoned: Anthology 1958-1983 CD (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
Greatest Hits
$22.39 While MUSICALLY RICH...AND FAMOUS documents the second half of British blues godfather Alexis Korner's career, KORNERSTONED adopts a more comprehensive approach, following the pioneering singer/guitarist from the very beginning of his musical life, all the way through every subsequent phase of his development. So we get not only his mid-1960s work with burgeoning blues-rock giants like Paul Rodgers and Steve Marriott, but also his `50s skiffle recordings (basically the British version of jug-band music) with the Ken Colyer band and his own skiffle group, and even an early acoustic guitar duel with famed fingerpicker Davey Graham on "3/4 A.D." Over the course of its ...
| | Jan & Dean All The Hits-From Surf City To Drag City CDs (1996)
Greatest Hits
$17.79 Digitally remastered by Kevin Reeves (April 1996, Capitol Recording Studios, Hollywood, California).
Jan & Dean are the quintessential Californian pop duo of the early 1960s; versed in surfing and hot-rod culture, they created music that provided a soundtrack for summertime fun. ALL THE HITS - FROM SURF CITY TO DRAG CITY lives up to its name, including Jan & Dean's numerous charting singles, as well as some rare outtakes and radio spots. These songs are breezy, lightweight, and well produced, and provide a nice setting for studio professionals such as Hal Blaine and Glen Campbell to work their magic. The sonic complexity of Jan Berry's productions was a serious influence on the young Brian Wilson, and one can easily follow the progression of '60s rock from "Dead Man's Curve" to the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations." As such, Jan & Dean are more influential than ...
