Charly En La Habana
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.
Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore West know how brilliant they could be on stage, and here's another gem, recorded at the Fillmore East this time and featuring 'One Way Out,' 'It's My Own Fault' (with Bloomfield trading licks with Johnny Winter...Johnny was signed to Columbia after this gig!). Newly remastered & now with 4 bonus tracks, 'Albert's Shuffle' (2002 Remix w/o Horns), 'Season of the Witch.' (2002 Remix w/o Horns), 'Blues For Nothing' (Studio Outtake) & 'Fat Grey Cloud' Previously Unreleased Live Track). Features 12-page booklet with unpublished ...

| | Louis Armstrong What A Wonderful World CD (1968)
Charly En La Habana
$15.05 Only the most hardhearted of cynics could resist the melancholy sweetness of this album's beloved title track. The song was a hit in 1968 and only became the opening cut on this wonderful album some 20 years later. This well-known recording of the tender ballad--complete with a 16-piece string section--is lovely enough. But it is Pops' gravelly voice and inimitable signature delivery that really bring out its beautiful, aching quality.
Also included are such hits as "Cabaret," "Dream A Little Dream Of Me," and the Mills Brothers' "I Guess I'll Get The Papers And Go Home." New songs such as "The Home Fire and "Give Me Your Kisses" show that Armstrong, even in his later years, was still bursting with personality and the essence of jazz. One of his best-selling albums ever, WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD is, well, wonderful! This disc acts as a fond tribute to one of the most important figures in American ...

| | Ultimate Jaco Pastorius CD (2007)
Charly En La Habana
$11.59 At 10 tracks, ULTIMATE may seem a little thin, but the range and level of invention present in those tracks is enough to compensate for the short running time. While some key tracks seem to be missing (his scintillating version of "Birdland" with Weather Report, for example), the selections--"Donna Lee," "3 Views of a Secret" and "Liberty City," among them--show off all the technical dazzle of Pastorious's playing, as well as his formidable skills as an arranger and bandleader. PUNK JAZZ offers a more complete overview, but for a concise sampler of the artist, it's hard to go wrong with this set.
Legendary bassist Jaco Pastorious was involved in so many different projects, and had his fingers in so many musical pies, that it's difficult to get a comprehensive grasp on his oeuvre. For this reason, compilations offer a particularly useful introduction, and 2007's ULTIMATE JACO PASTORIOUS (along with 2003's PUNK JAZZ: THE JACO PASTORIOUS ANTHOLOGY) are good bets.
Personnel include: Jaco Pastorius (piano, synthesizer, electric bass); Joni Mitchell (vocals); Hubert Laws (flute); Randy Emerick (alto flute, clarinet, baritone saxophone); Alex Foster (piccolo, clarinet, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone); Toots Thielemans (harmonica); Mario Cruz (clarinet, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Bob Mintzer (bass clarinet, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Paul McCandless (oboe, English horn, tenor saxophone); Don Bonsanti, Gary Lindsay (woodwinds, saxophone); Wayne Shorter (soprano saxophone); Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone); Brian O'Flaherty, Elmer Brown, Forrest Buchtel, Kenneth ...
