| | Bob Dylan Together Through Life CD (2009)
Rock Classics Of The 60'S & 70'S: Acoustic Collection CD music
$15.39 After two decades of outsourcing the producing and arranging of his records to everyone from Mark Knopfler to Daniel Lanois, Bob Dylan stopped phoning it in in the '00s and began directly shaping their sound and feel. As producer of TOGETHER THROUGH LIFE, he elevates the near-cliche material with a beautifully crafted latticework of breathy border-town accordion and smoky guitar riffs (courtesy of Los Lobos's David Hidalgo and Heartbreaker Mike Campbell respectively), steel guitar, mandolin, and brushed drums. Initially intended as a soundtrack of an Olivier Drahan movie, the album finds a pleasantly off-hand bard building on the wistful romanticism of recent ballads (like MODERN TIMES's "Beyond the Horizon") with a cycle of songs (nine of them co-written with legendary Dead lyricist Robert Hunter) about dreaming, hoping, and good love. Indeed, the change in "I Feel A Change Comin' On" is not of the apocalyptic hard rain variety, but portends a potential tryst as Dylan chimes "life is for love" with uncharacteristic sweetness. Via languid slow burns ("Forgetful Heart"), sensual ...
| | Tortoise Beacons Of Ancestorship CD (2009)
Rock Classics Of The 60'S & 70'S: Acoustic Collection music CDs
$12.78 Returning after a five-year gap (which, granted, included a box set and a collaborative record with Bonnie "Prince" Billy), Tortoise confronted a pair of age-old musical questions: does anyone really care about an experimental rock group after 15 years, and does said group actually have anything to say after that length of time? BEACONS OF ANCESTORSHIP neatly squashes all those questions and assumptions, revealing a band that is just as fascinated with sound--and just as intrigued by its myriad possibilities--as they were when they debuted in 1993. The time signatures are constantly shifting, the lights of vitality and inventiveness they displayed twelve years earlier are completely undimmed, and the reference points for their music are constantly expanding. The spaghetti Western impressionism of "The Fall of Seven Diamonds Plus One" would be ...

| | Iggy Pop Preliminaires CD (2009)
Rock Classics Of The 60'S & 70'S: Acoustic Collection CD music
$13.29 Iggy Pop's 2009 release, PRELIMINAIRES, is certainly one of the more ambitious projects of his long and infamous career. Inspired in part by the writings of French author Michele Houellebecq, the album is more broadly a tip of the cap to the sensuality of French culture. Stylistically diverse, PRELIMINAIRES finds the proto-punk icon touching on New Orleans second-line brass ("King of the Dogs"), bluesy acoustic numbers ("He's Dead/She's Alive"), and, naturally, chanson ("Les Feuilles Mortes").
Iggy has always possessed a slithery baritone croon, and the jazzy noir qualities of PRELIMINAIRES allow him to indulge this often underrated quality in his voice. While there might be some ...

| | Saxon Wheels Of Steel CD (2008) (Import) Germany
Rock Classics Of The 60'S & 70'S: Acoustic Collection songs
$11.45 The new wave of British heavy metal that dawned along with the 1980s yielded heavier and more popular bands than Saxon (Iron Maiden and Def Leppard, to name just two), but anyone who listens to their second album, WHEELS OF STEEL, will recognize the origins of what came to be the dominant style of FM radio metal for over a decade. Combining the muscle of Black Sabbath with the nimble, twisting two-guitar attack of Thin Lizzy, Saxon helped create the template for British "power metal." Its driving rhythms and wailing theatrical vocals may have eventually become the norm, but in 1980 WHEELS OF STEEL was a shiny chrome beast of an album, and without precedent. Songs such as "Motorcycle Man" and "Freeway Mad" are the soundtrack for outlaw biker parties on both sides of the pond, and "Suzie ...

Rock Classics Of The 60'S & 70'S: Acoustic Collection CD music
$44.15 Record-setting R&B vocal group Boyz II Men have never been averse to covers, having scored mega-hits in the early-1990s with both the Five Satins doo-wop classic "In the Still of the Night (I'll Remember)" and the G.C. Cameron classic "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday." On 2004's THROWBACK, the group tries its hand at an assortment of vintage R&B tunes and succeeds with an array of fine melodies.
THROWBACK is the outfit's first release after the departure of Michael McCary, but the trio's vocal harmonies are as tight and alluring as ever. In fact, it's when the harmonies take center stage that the album is at its most appealing. The group reinterprets Michael Jackson's gorgeous ballad "Human Nature," accompanied by only a few African drums and a light acoustic guitar, as ...
