The late-'70s was an interesting time to be a Bee Gee. The trio had experienced a rebirth as disco kings via SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER even though their music at the time was closer to the Spinners than to Donna Summer. By 1979, disco's popularity had begun to wane, but this didn't affect the Gibb's much, since they were primarily just R&B/pop artists to begin with. On SPIRITS, the Bee Gees blend their Aussie take on Philly Soul (the transcendent "Too Much Heaven," the suggestive "Love You Inside Out") with contemporary pop ("Tragedy") and that unique sound that is theirs alone (the serene, glowing title track). The brothers' trademark harmonies and irresistible pop hooks were in evidence throughout, making SPIRITS HAVING FLOWN essential for those enamored of mid-period Bee Gees or R&B-flavored '70s pop.
The boys followed Saturday Night Fever with their second consecutive #1 LP, a dazzling production featuring the #1 hits Love You Inside Out; Too Much Heaven , and Tragedy . 1979 release.

The Ultimate Bee Gees Album Spirits is the Bee Gees most successful album Apart From The SNF soundtrack. The album features three gigantic no.1s, Too Much Heaven,Tragedy and Love You Inside Out. The title cut was also a sizeable hit. Hopefully a proper remastered version with bonus cuts will be released in the near future. Submitted by Mario (San Francisco,Ca,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Best harmonies ever The Spirits (Having Flown) album contains the best harmonies ever recorded by the Bee Gees.
In fact, the first half of the “Spirits (Having Flown)” album, including the songs “Tragedy”, “Too Much Heaven”, “Love You Inside Out”, ”Reaching Out” and “Spirits (Having Flown” is so unique that the second half suffers in comparison.

Falsetto, Falsetto, Falsetto Most love this. It sold millions and millions. Too much falsetto. I love the BEE GEES, and consider this one of their weaker albums. Geez, buy 1st, Horizontal, Mr.Natural, Main Course, Living Eyes. These far exceed the contents here. Robin vocals are the ultimate for me, but I'd take Cucumber Castle over this. It has outlived its time I´m a Spanish fan of the Bee Gees. I love most of the songs they recorded in the seventies and some of the new ones (those from the 80s on. If I had to choose only one of their albums I´d probably say "Spirits having flown". There are lots of wonderful moments in these songs. I used to like all of the tracks when it was released in 1978 but now nearly 30 years later I still like them but I´ve learnt to love some of them more than the others, especially "love you inside out" and above all "spirits having flown". If you like the Bee Gees, listen to this album. It will not let you down. Submitted by Mike (Spain) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo This review is for a different format.
Best of the Best Spirits Having Flown is the best album made by the best musical group out there. Their falsetto's that became their trademark are all over this album but more importantly, so is their songwriting. Every Bee Gees fan knows Tragedy, Too Much Heaven, and Love You Inside Out. However, some of the better tracks aren't even the hits that came off of this album. Unless you own the album, songs like Stop, Thing Again, Search Find and others are going to be new to you. There's nothing like hearing new Bee Gees music for the first time. I HIGHLY recommend this CD if you like good music. If you like the Bee Gees, you should already have it Submitted by Troy (Jacksonville, FL) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo This review is for a different format.
