Joanna Newsom and Devendra Banhart comrade Andy Cabic's band Vetiver (they've backed Newsom and Banhart often plays with the band) released its second full-length, TO FIND ME GONE, in 2006. While the crystalline atmospherics on the opener, "Been So Long," and the piercing guitar drones that invade "Red Lantern Girls" are effective reminders that this is music rooted in the Haight-Ashbury psychedelic tradition, but better still is the album's ramshackle acoustic-driven shuffle that recalls the Grateful Dead at their most rootsy and irresistibly carefree.

Shineywater, Andy Cabic (vocals, guitar); Rachael Hughes (vocals, keyboards); Kevin Barker (guitar, ukulele); Noah Georgeson, Brad Laner (guitar); Dina Maccabee (violin, viola); Alisa Rose, Irene Sazer (violin); Jessica Ivry (cello); Gary Held (harmonium); Otto Hauser (keyboards, drums, percussion); Guy Blakeslee, Thom Monahan (percussion).

Spin (p.90) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "These are the kind of go-with-the-flow countrified tunes that the Grateful Dead used to spin between epic jams, but with a more delicate acoustic touch..." Q (p.119) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "This homebrewed, spacious music can still sound pretty blissful, but the quality songs have a directness and variety that will please David Gray fans as much as the acid folk devotees." Q (p.117) - Ranked #80 in Q Magazine's "100 Greatest Albums of 2006." Magnet (p.112) - "[The album] lovingly recreates the 2 a.m. trippiness of WORKINGMAN'S DEAD-era Grateful Dead." Dirty Linen (p.59) - "Cabic's wistful singing style lies somewhere between the vocal phrasing of Roger McGuinn and Steve Forbert, with touches of Banhart's trademark vibrato." Mojo (Publisher) (p.101) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's pure life-affirmation, topped off by a climax of cooed vocals and lilting recorders....TO FIND ME GONE seems to exist in its own magic bubble..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.78) - "It's an album whose chiming folk rock template expands to embrace Topanga Canyon sophistication, Creedence raunch, RUMOURS-era Fleetwood Mac and T. Rex..."
