All American Bluegrass Girl
$14.65 ONE STEP AHEAD was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album.
When Rhonda Vincent first hit the national bluegrass scene in the early '90s, fans were amazed by her clear voice and fleet-fingered fiddle and mandolin playing. Over time, however, the depth of Vincent's musical talent has become even more impressive than her chops. With ONE STEP AHEAD, the musician truly comes into her own as one of the giants of the genre, even writing five of the albums' 12 tunes. Backed by a band that includes stalwarts Stuart Duncan (fiddle) and Bryan Sutton (guitar), Vincent approaches both her originals and the carefully chosen standards with the same full-bore energy.
Of special note are the absolutely spine-tingling harmony vocals she and brother Darrin share on "Pathway Of Teardrops" and "Fisher Of Men." Like other sibling vocalists such as The Everlys and The Delmores, Rhonda and Darrin sing as one instrument, their perfectly in-tune voices often sounding a bit like two notes on an accordion being played at once. Sonically, the disc is pristine, giving even the traditional numbers a contemporary feel. An exciting mix of hot picking, stellar vocalizing, and wonderfully varied material, ONE STEP AHEAD reveals Rhonda Vincent as one of the finest all-around talents ...
| | Alexis Korner Kornerstoned: Anthology 1958-1983 CD (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
All American Bluegrass Girl
$22.39 While MUSICALLY RICH...AND FAMOUS documents the second half of British blues godfather Alexis Korner's career, KORNERSTONED adopts a more comprehensive approach, following the pioneering singer/guitarist from the very beginning of his musical life, all the way through every subsequent phase of his development. So we get not only his mid-1960s work with burgeoning blues-rock giants like Paul Rodgers and Steve Marriott, but also his `50s skiffle recordings (basically the British version of jug-band music) with the Ken Colyer ...

| | Martina Mcbride Timeless CD (2005)
All American Bluegrass Girl
$8.99 While many of her contemporaries (including Trisha Yearwood and Patty Loveless) imbued their 2005 releases with a traditional bent, Martina McBride went one step further and recorded TIMELESS, an entire album of country classics, many of which date back to the 1950s and '60s. McBride's commitment to these songs is evident both on the disc's extensive liner notes (which present many facts about the tunes, such as who originally performed each one), as well as in her soulful, stirring performances. While every track here benefits from her nuanced delivery, McBride shines the brightest on a buoyant version of Ray Price's "I'll Be There" (with additional singing by Dan Tyminski and Rhonda Vincent), a swooning take on Don ...
| | Vince Gill These Days CDs (2006) Digipak
All American Bluegrass Girl
$19.39 Not since Prince released the three-hour, three-CD set EMANCIPATION in 1996 or the Magnetic Fields took a similar number of discs for the sprawling 69 LOVE SONGS in 1999 has an artist attempted something as expansive as Vince Gill's THESE DAYS. A four-disc box set of all new material, nearly all of it Gill originals, THESE DAYS is possibly the widest-ranging country album of the modern era. The four discs are thematically and stylistically arranged. Disc one, WORKIN' ON A BIG CHILL, is a 1960s-flavored rock-and-roll album that recalls Bob Dylan's late '60s work with the Band and features Bonnie Bramlett's vocals on several songs. Disc two, THE REASON WHY, is a modern pop record in the style of Shania Twain's international releases, with several duet partners including Sheryl Crow and Leann Rimes. Disc three, SOME THINGS NEVER GET OLD, is straight honky-tonk in the Ray Price and Lefty Frizzell tradition. Finally, disc four, LITTLE BROTHER, is a strictly acoustic bluegrass and folk album that cuts Gill's writing and singing to its most elemental. Taken together, the four albums reveal Vince Gill to be one of modern country's most impressive performers.
Personnel include: Vince Gill (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Dan ...
