New Mystic Trance 2
$14.99 Fans of Tiesto's progressive-flavored trance anthems of the early-`00s were already well versed on the DJ-turned-producer's fondness for ethereal, siren-like vocals and epic-sized productions (best illustrated on female-fronted remixes featuring the likes of Sarah McLaughlan, Sixpence None the Richer, and Faithless). But, despite the relative pop leanings of such past collaborations, Tiesto never enjoyed major success beyond the club circuit. KALEIDOSCOPE, the producer's 2009 album, not only has its sights set on a more mainstream pop/rock appeal but--with guests spots from Bloc Party's Kele Okereke, Sigur Ros' Jonsi, and Canadian twin-songstresses Tegan and Sara--possibly beyond into indie credibility. Betraying the influence of the aforementioned Icelandic post-rockers, the album kicks off with the appropriately majestic "Kaleidoscope," a hypnotic, leisurely epic of dreamy synth pads and Jonsi's wispy falsetto. A consistent, dreamlike quality is sustained throughout, particularly on the piano- and breaks-driven "It's ...
| | Lily Allen It's Not Me, It's You CD (2009)
New Mystic Trance 2
$13.69 On her 2009 sophomore album, IT'S NOT ME, IT'S YOU, feisty English pop singer Lily Allen sticks with the strengths of her lauded debut, presenting a collection of songs lined with biting lyrics and catchy pop hooks. While Allen tones down the heavily accented British-isms found on ALRIGHT, STILL, she amps up both atmosphere and melody, resulting in "The Fear," a sweeping synth-pop number, and the dreamy "Who'd Have Known," both of which are enhanced by producer Greg Kurstin (The Bird and the Bee). Those concerned that Ms. Allen might be getting too refined can take comfort in the sassy (and slightly twangy) "Not Fair" and the cheerily aggressive "F**k You," tracks that reveal that, although she has matured, the cheeky vocalist isn't completely ready to play nice just yet. Though artists such as Katy Perry and Lady Gaga have ...

New Mystic Trance 2
$18.29 "Short Circuit" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. "One More Time" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.
In 1997, this French electro-dance duo made a huge intercontinental splash with its debut album, HOMEWORK, mixing disco, house, funk, techno, and more. While Daft Punk's second recording still focuses on the maximum accessibility that earned its debut such high marks, there's less of an obvious focus on pop hooks. Irony and house beats are the order of the day, and an eclectic ...

$11.89 What do you do when you've already changed the face of music once in a decade? If you're Bristol, UK sonic architects Massive Attack, you refine the model for the times. MEZZANINE, the third album from the producer/DJ crew who, for all intents and purposes, created the genre of trip-hop, is thicker, less spacious and far more guitar-heavy than their previous efforts. Then again, the blue-print remains: hip-hop beats, behemoth bass underpinnings and spare melodic overtones still control Massive Attack's drive. After all, one doesn't expect the inventors to abandon their discoveries just because every pop new jack is onto their gold ...

| | Patrick Stalinski To Sing A Prayer CD (2008)
New Mystic Trance 2
$11.25 The Vocal ArtistWhat is a classical tenor to do when he doesn’t want to sing opera? Like most classically-trained tenors, Patrick Stalinski can list many of the master works among his repertoire. While Patrick’s early career focused on classical sacred performances, his real passion is to re-create traditional music in new ways. For those who would not normally listen to classical music, he strives to give them a taste of music’s power and still feel like they are listening to something new. He sometimes describes the genre-stretching style of his first two albums as “classically-flavored new age pop.”A rare ‘natural’ tenor, Patrick’s range and versatility are evidenced throughout his work. From Bach Cantatas to Broadway tunes, he’s even dared to sing Denver, bringing audiences to tears with his own rendition of Annie’s Song. He is a torch song tenor, a la Rondstadt’s ‘Round Midnight but with the power and passion of Pavarotti. The RecordingsA trip to Boulder, Colorado in 1996 cemented a relationship with composer Yves Vincent of San Diego, who began writing new arrangements to accompany Patrick's natural tenor voice. Pat believed it wasn't enough to simply sing the familiar songs in their traditional way, and the soul of Yves' arrangements made the perfect match to the passion of his voice. Yves says, “Patrick’s clear voice sings straight to the soul.” In March 1997, the pair completed their first release, To Sing A Prayer, ...
