An ambitious world fusion project, SIWAN brings together the Norwegian pianist Jon Balke, Moroccan singer Amina Alaoui, the Early Music ensemble Barokksolistene, minimalist trumpeter Jon Hassell, and others in a cross-cultural melange that imagines itself somewhere back in the medieval times of Andalusia, during the era when Spain was dominated by Muslim rule. STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's composition not only travels genres but centuries. Lágrimas Negras (Black Tears) is a collaborative effort between the octogenarian Cuban piano master Bebo Valdés and the reigning Spanish flamenco cantador, Dieguito El Cigala. Recorded for Fernando Trueba and Nat Chediak's Calle 54 label, the sessions took place in Madrid between September and December 2002. Maestro Valdés (born in 1918), the father of the jazz pianist Chucho, has a long history as an innovator in Cuban music. He recorded the first Afro-Cuban jazz session in 1952, and was a tutor to the great bandleader Beny Moré, writing early charts for him. Valdés is also a world-class arranger. Dieguito El Cigala was born in 1960, and has become the undisputed king of Spain's flamenco singers. Terra feels like an attempt to move Mariza into the musical mainstream. She's already established herself at the forefront of fado, as one of the leading performers of the emotive Portuguese style, and there's no doubt she possesses a wonderful voice. But the addition of several guests, such as Chucho Valdés, Ivan Lins, and Tito Paris (among others) seems to open up the seams between fado and other genres, including Brazilian music and jazz. You would be hard pressed to find another recording where a flamenco guitarist interprets the music of Bill Evans. This one has Nino Josele playing select pieces performed and beloved by the modern jazz piano icon, and in three instances composed by him. A variety of settings are used, from solo acoustic guitar, some duo and vocal efforts, guitar-bass-drums, and a few guest cameos. The sound of Josele through Evans is thoughtful, introspective, facile, understated and romantic. Dynamics are shaded with a sweet restraint aside confidence in doing the music justice. The CD opens with the perfect prologue, the Evans overture "Peace Piece," as delicate and pristine a composition as anyone has ever written, played perfectly. Then the pace quickens as Josele and his trio kick up "Waltz for Debby," at first in typical 3/4 time, then in a higher 4/4 gear. The third Evans evergreen "Turn out the Stars" is more typically in flamenco style apart from all the other selections, again with the trio. There are six standards, the highlights being solo guitar samplings of "When I Fall in Love" and a multitude of distinct Spanish styles showcased during "The Dolphin," Jimmy Rowles ballad "The Peacocks" accented by Joe Lovano's piquant tenor sax, and Tom Harrell's trumpet playing an extrapolated melody on the second time repeat ...
