Perhaps more than any other era in the history of hard rock/heavy metal, the early 21st century has seen more and more bands comprised of a female singer fronting an all-male band (Arch Enemy, Otep, etc.). But the one female-fronted band to break through in a major way commercially during this time was Evanescence, a group with heavy goth leanings. It would be understandable to figure that the Polish band, Artrosis, is merely jumping on the Evanescence bandwagon after hearing their 2006 release, In the Flower's Shade. But the truth of the matter is that Artrosis has been in existence since 1995, and have issued a plethora of releases in their homeland. That said, the songs on In the Flower's Shade certainly sound cut from the same musical cloth as their stateside counterpart, especially on such tracks as "Unreal Story I" and "White Page," which merge heavy riffs, melodic singing, and airy keyboards. With In the Flower's Shade being one of their first albums receiving an official stateside release, fans of melodic/mainstream goth metal may soon be applying their eyeliner to the sounds of Artrosis. ~ Greg Prato
This is the English version of the third Artrosis album but with extra bonuses: picture gallery, discography and a video to "Among the Flowers and Shadows"! Artrosis, considered to be the best gothic band in Poland, presents 11 marvelous compositions making up one lyrical & musical whole. Medeahs vocal skills seem to improve with every new album and here her work exceeds anything she has done before. The English language makes her voice more "fluent" and soft. The multiple guitar solos make the record slightly varied in style and climate, though never too off-the-course of Artrosis' characteristic and unique atmosphere.
Artrosis: Medeah (vocals); Rafal Grunt (guitar); Maciej Niedzielski (keyboards); Marcin Pendowski (electric bass).
Additional personnel: Artur Dominik (djembe, tabla).

Dream Theater's tenth long-player is about as dense and challenging as any album in the band's discography and emphasizes not only the virtuoso members' stupefying musicianship, but also their most aggressive and thoroughly metallic songwriting tendencies. The sixteen-minute opener "A Nightmare to Remember" quickly establishes ...

In The Flower's Shade CD music
$10.45 While many hard-core Black Sabbath fans consider 1975's SABOTAGE to be the band's most underrated album, it can also be pointed to as the beginning of the end for the original Osbourne-Iommi-Butler-Ward line-up. Osbourne was starting to feel disillusioned with the group, and the seeds for his highly successful solo career in the '80s were being planted. That said, SABOTAGE was the last Sabbath album to truly contain all of the components that made the quartet one the most popular heavy metal bands of all-time, before it pursued less focused musical detours.
The album's most surprising cut is undoubtedly the tripped-out psychedelic rocker "Am I Going Insane (Radio)," which would be included a year later on Sabbath's greatest-hits collection, WE SOLD OUR SOUL FOR ROCK N' ROLL. Other standouts include the crushing album opener, "Hole in ...

$17.59 If there's anything wrong with Repertoire's Singles A's & B's, it's that Wizzard peaked early, albeit brilliantly, and their B-sides never capitalized on their dazzling, Spector/Beach Boys-tinted rock & roll. It's no coincidence that those B-sides were written by everybody else in the band but Wood, and that most of those were instrumentals. Some are amusing (the ...

$8.99 If avant-garde jazz artists decided to become headbangers, the most logical place for them would be math metal. The 2000s have given us a long list of technical metal bands that thrive on angularity and difficult time signatures, which of course, are also easy to find in avant-garde jazz. But some technical metal bands are more accessible than others, and Ills of Modern Man has more of a sense of groove than a lot of other technical metal discs. Despised Icon is a band that combines technical death metal with technical metalcore. Some of the vocals favor death metal's stereotypical "Cookie Monster" ...

| | Fruit Bats Ruminant Band CD (2009) Digipak
In The Flower's Shade CD music
$11.79 Eric Johnson has poked and prodded at the Fruit Bats for years, reinventing the band's lineup with every album and continually stretching the boundaries between pop, Americana, and sun-soaked folk. Released after a four-year hiatus, during which time Johnson worked as a sideman for Vetiver and the Shins, THE RUMINANT BAND features yet another cast of characters, few of whom have worked with the Fruit Bats before. Nonetheless, this is a thoroughly collaborative release, featuring production from the band's own drummer and contributions from the whole five-piece family. Johnson remains in the director's chair, but he looks to his bandmates to add depth to the material, from the title track's '70s-styled strut to the saloon-bound twang of "The Hobo Girl." "I'll always keep you warm, I'll always keep you nice, I'll never snow on your parade," he promises during "Tegucigalpa," and most of the album follows that pledge, eschewing any sort of inclement ...
