| | Lou Rawls Black & Blue/Tabacco Road CD Lou Rawls Discography of CDs
Both BLACK AND BLUE and TOBACCO ROAD focus on jazz and blues standards, including George Gershwin's "Summertime," Hoagy Carmichael's "Rockin' Chair," W.C. Handy's "St. Louis Blues," and John D. Loudermilk's "Tobacco Road," which would become Rawls's signature tune. The artist's rugged, soulful singing is the perfect match for the well-arranged big band, and the 2006 CD-issue of these classic albums is a welcome arrival.
This excellent twofer brings together a pair of albums Lou Rawls recorded for Capitol in the early 1960s. Both sessions feature Rawls with a hard-swinging big band and flanked by a three-strong saxophone section and the soul-jazz organist Richard "Groove" Holmes. The results, as one might expect, are both raucous and smoky. And while Rawls wouldn't hit his stride commercially until 1966's LOU RAWLS LIVE, he sounds utterly in command here.
Personnel: Lou Rawls (vocals); Gene Edwards (guitar); Curtis Amy (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Alexander Nelson (alto saxophone); Lou Ciotti, Jay Migliori (tenor saxophone); Jack Nimitz (baritone saxophone); Bob Rolfe, Bobby Bryant , Bud Brisbois (trumpet); Horace Tapscott, Lou Blackburn, Lester Robertson (trombone); Bob Knight (bass trombone); Richard "Groove" Holmes (organ); Jim Crutcher (bass instrument); Leroy Henderson (drums).

| | B B King Mr. Blues/Confessin' The Blues CD (2005) (Import) Remastered; United Kingdom
Black & Blue/Tabacco Road songs
$18.79 This CD contains B.B. King's first ABC-Paramount studio efforts -- Mr. Blues (1962) and Confessin' the Blues (1965), respectively. While there are inevitable similarities between the projects, offering them back-to-back allows listeners an acute sense of King's rapid maturation and development during what was by all accounts the nexus of the guitarist/vocalist's career. The dozen-song Mr. Blues was a haphazard start for King with the contents taken from three different recording sessions in a 13-month period (March 1, 1962 through April 11, 1963). Based on the results, the artist was being presented as a blues shouter, supported by an antiquated big band and/or orchestra. Arguably the best of the lot comes from the Maxwell Davis led ensemble on the first of several Big Joe Turner tunes, the Ahmet Ertegun penned "Chains of Love." The upgrade of Ivory Joe Hunter's "Blues at Midnight" is closer to the spirit of modern era King as he aptly demonstrates his singular testifyin' style. The fun and frolic of both "I'm Gonna Sit in 'Til You Give In" and "My Baby's Comin' Home" are ...
| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Black & Blue/Tabacco Road album
$12.89 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's ...
| | Jimmy Raney CD (1956) Remastered
Black & Blue/Tabacco Road CD music
$9.59 Assisted by the trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, the post-bop guitarist Jimmy Raney is heard here in a 1956 session performing a varied set that displays his lyrical, often cerebral playing to its best advantage, including the standards "How Long Has This Been Going On?" and "Isn't It Romantic."
Though Jimmy Raney recorded under his own name as early as 1953, it's this 1956 set that is regarded as his arrival as a leader. Raney is as fine an arranger as he is a guitarist. These eight tracks with Bob Brookmeyer on trombone -- another fine arranger in a soloist's role -- shine with the ease and fluidity of the best of the cool sessions recorded at the dawn of hard bop. One of the finest examples of the interplay between Raney and Brookmeyer occurs at the beginning of the album's second track, "How Long Has This Been Goin' On," where ...

| | Art Blakey Jazz Messengers CD (1958) (Import) Reissue; Remastered; United Kingdom
Black & Blue/Tabacco Road songs
$11.79 This is the U.K. import version of Jazz genius Art Blakey's classic 1958 album JAZZ MESSENGERS, featuring Thelonious Monk.
Two giants of modern jazz collaborate on this session of all-Monk tunes. Recorded in 1958, Blakey's always-impressive Jazz Messengers are joined by the Mad Professor himself (this record affords a glimpse of Monk as a distinguished and individual accompanist, in addition to his usual dazzling lead performances), for workouts on such classics as "Blue Monk," "Rhythm-a-ning," and "In Walked Bud."
Side by side, Blakey and Monk exhibit a strong, electric interplay, and the similarities of their approaches (both are concerned with space, polyrhythms, ...
