Trumpeter Diego Urcola put together something truly special for 2006's VIVA. A standard session featuring Urcola's bright, bold horn sound and formidable chops would be reason enough to celebrate, but the all-star team of sidemen the artist rounded up is an added bonus. Saxophonist/clarinetist Paquito D'Rivera, sax man Jimmy Heath, bassist Avishai Cohen, and vibes/marimba player Dave Samuels are among the luminaries on board here, and the group holds forth on the Latin-inflected numbers and the straight-ahead swing. Packed with superior playing and lively, percolating energy, VIVA is one of the best Latin jazz bets of 2006.

$15.15 Veteran arranger Gerald Wilson utilized a New York band full of all-stars for this very rewarding and memorable project. Three of the selections ("Dorian," "Ray's Vision at the U," and "Blues for Manhattan") ...
| | Edward Simon Unicity CD (2006)
Viva CD music
$13.69 While a sideman with the inimitable Terence Blanchard, pianist/composer Edward Simon released a series of recorded ensemble works, including La Bikina and Afinidad, which impressed upon his listeners his sense of swing, melodic structure, and harmonic balance. Later, with drummer Eric Harland and bassist John Patitucci, Simon released The Process, followed by Simplicity in 2004 with bassist Avishai Cohen and drummer Adam Cruz. These trio recordings were critically acclaimed and led Simon to continue his legacy as a bandleader in the classic trio format. With his third recorded trio work, Unicity, Simon now offers his audience an impeccable selection of ten songs accompanied by drummer Brian Blade and bassist Patitucci. As his best recording to date, Unicity brilliantly captures Simon's gold-standard ...
| | Dave Holland Pass It On CD (2008)
Viva music CDs
$9.69 Using a sextet, upright bassist Holland sets the bar even higher than on his previous efforts, adding the always tasteful pianist Mulgrew Miller and a four-horn front line that is relentless. The jaunty opening number, "The Sum of All Parts," is a 5/4 African percussion-based piece led by Robin Eubanks with folded-in alto and trumpet and witty counterpoint. Adding a light samba feel during the upbeat "Fast Track" with the horns in perfect unison, the ensemble shifts up to hard bop. A 10/8 choppy and bouncy "Modern Times" also uses Brazilian inferences ...
| | Dave Holland Critical Mass CD (2006)
Viva songs
$13.59 One word that comes to mind when listening to Critical Mass is generosity. Double-bassist Dave Holland, four decades into his career, could certainly be forgiven for taking the word "leader" at its literal meaning, calling all the shots and keeping his musicians at bay. But that's not what he's about, and at any given time Critical Mass could just as easily have been credited to saxist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin Eubanks, vibist/marimbaist Steve Nelson, or drummer Nate Smith. Each player is provided with ample moments in which to take charge, and not fleeting, gratuitous moments but rather significant chunks of solo/lead space. Holland's belief in sharing extends to the area of composition as well. Each bandmember contributes one piece to the album (Holland does claim the other four, however) and, more often than not, uses that opportunity to shapeshift, to push the band -- and make no mistake, this is a band, not a random collection of studio players -- into ...
| | Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra Love Supreme CD (2005)
Viva album
$10.05 Few arrangers have attempted to score John Coltrane's landmark suite A Love Supreme for good reason: it is very difficult to stand up to the emotional impact of the composer's original recording. But Wynton Marsalis ambitiously dove into scoring it for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra for this Palmetto CD. The results are rather uneven. In spite of the best efforts of the participating musicians, the solos often prove to be a distraction, leaning more toward humor than sticking to Coltrane's message. The most ridiculous section occurs in the opening movement, "Acknowledgement," when the baton is passed from one player to the next as they take turns playing the brief cadence of the well-known A Love Supreme vamp, which quickly grows tedious. "Resolution" works somewhat better, though there are sections which sound as if more rehearsal time was needed. Drummer Herlin Riley makes a strong effort ...

| | Fantastic Jazz Harp Of Dorothy Ashby CD (1965)
Viva music CDs
$11.69 Recorded live at The Village Gate, New York, New York. Originally released on Atlantic (1521).
This budget two-fer from the Jazz Collectables label teams up a pair of separate Atlantic recordings from jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby and pianist Junior Mance. On the 1965 release The Fantastic Jazz Harp of Dorothy Ashby, the harpist is joined by bassist Richard Davis, drummer Grady Tate, percussionist Willie Bobo, and a sporadic horn section on four Ashby originals and six standards. The four lengthy tracks that make up Live at the Top were recorded in 1968 featuring Mance at the piano with ...
