5 stars the master of new sax technique
bergonzi is a master i like this album a lot he uses overtones and harmonics permutations like no one. i recomend this album a lot. pianist is also excelent.

4 stars An apt title "Tenor of The Times" indeed!
During another generation this cat would be the Clifford Jordan or Booker Ervin of that era.Bergonzi is an ernest capable player who like Ervin and Jordan is well deserving of more attention.He is hard swinging and a convincing balladeer.The main selling point of this disc is Bergonzi s relaxed and to the point phrasing. Amongst all the multitude of jazz this is well worth a listen.

This double-CD set is not only the best of Bill Chase's output but -- comprising all three of their albums -- virtually their complete finished studio work, before the plane crash that killed Chase and much of the group. The mastering on this Wounded Bird reissue is excellent, with a full solid bass sound topped by soaring highs on the brass and no compression to speak of. It's not as though this catalog has been overused, in terms of its master tape library -- apart from the hit "Get It On" -- but it's still good to know that the stuff has been well handled in terms of being digitalized. Additionally, the producers have reprinted Nat Hentoff's original essay about the group from their first album (and oh, for a time when college audiences could resonate to the writings of someone like Hentoff, who is now as much of a legend as a writer as the jazz people he wrote about are as musicians....); and they've also ...

By 1961, film composer Henry Mancini was already well known in Hollywood for his jazzy, brassy scores to Touch of Evil and Peter Gunn. Were it not for the seven-song broadcast that opens the CD, this set would have received a much higher rating. The May 9, 1943 radio special should have been classic for it matched together trumpeter Bunk Johnson with trumpeter Mutt Carey, trombonist Kid Ory, clarinetist Wade Whaley, pianist Buster Wilson, guitarist Frank Pasley, bassist Ed Garland and drummer Everett Walsh. Unfortunately, Whaley is often way out of tune and he is overmiked, dominating the ensembles. Much of the time one can barely hear Bunk or Mutt although Johnson does have a nice solo on "Basin Street Blues." It is interesting to hear Ory a year before ...
