Personnel: Kevin Mayer (guitar). Audio Mixers: Luis Diaz; Fabian Marasciullo; Brian Stanley . Photographer: Earl "The Maverick" Randolph. Miami radio fixture, mix-tape scene mainstay, and a member of Fat Joe's Terror Squad (Fat Joe executive produced the album and appears on two tracks), DJ Khaled released his debut album, LISTENNN..., in 2006. Loaded up with an all-star line-up of guest MCs--from Dirty South thugs like Bun B and Chamillionaire, to East Coast hardcore figures like Jadakiss and Juelz Santana, to Kanye West and reggaeton star Pitbull--Khaled packs his tracks with more than enough frenetic, synth-driven bounce to the ounce to keep them noticeable amidst the overcrowded field of early-2000s thugged-out party rap. Albums from a hip-hop crew's DJ have been iffy proposals since Terminator X started moonlighting from his usual gig in Public Enemy. Often rappers give their B-list tracks to the DJ album, and there's even more of a threat of no unifying factor to make the album flow. But Terror Squad's DJ Khaled is also a producer, and the host of numerous mixtapes -- where flow really matters -- including one of the best surrounding Lil Wayne's Tha Carter, Vol. 2, and it was up against a lot of stiff competition. While the cover artwork to Listennn: The Album looks very mixtape, Khaled is more a curator of the album, letting tracks fade out to conclusion even though he occasionally add his shout-outs. Whatever he did to land these tracks, it must have been amazing. First off, there's the massive "Problem" featuring Beanie Sigel reflecting on the state of hip-hop from behind prison walls with a hooky "Jay and Dame ain't speakin'/Game and 50 Cent beefin'" chorus over a great Khaled production. Sigel's lyrics will endear the track to every hip-hop fan, but whether you want to pick Kanye West's slick, snide, and so def "Grammy Family" as the runner-up, or the Southern balling "Holla at Me" with superstars Lil Wayne and Paul Wall bouncing off the next in line Rick Ross, depends on whether you vote North or South. The album leans toward the South and collects some tracks that have been making the mixtape rounds for a while toward the end. The selection isn't haphazard and the sequencing is just as good. Like Tony Touch did before him, Khaled has gone from behind the scenes to mixtapes to killer compilation host, all the while keeping his ear to the street. You can reap the benefits here. ~ David Jeffries DJ Khaled Listenn... Songs Listenn... WHERES KHALED???? IF THIS IS KHALEDS ALBUM, THEN WHY DOESNT HE RAP? CUZ HE CANT. ONLY 3 TRACKS THAT ARE HOT, HOLLA AT ME, CANDY PAINT & MOVEMENT. THATS IT. NOT RECOMMENDED..WACK!!!! Submitted by ALGIERZ_ROCKER (DALLAS, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 3 found this helpful.
Ehhh, it's aiight. 01-intro: Khaled talkin about how he's gonna take over, but he only produces like 2 or 3 tracks on here... Cool & Dre do most of the work.
-BORN N RAISED: the beat is straight, Trick Daddy represents like always, and Pitbull isn't THAT annoying on this tack, but Rick Ross jus can't Rap. Khaled needs so stop putting rappers on the mic just because they from Dade County.
-GANGSTA S**T: good beat, al 4 rappers hold it down, especially Bun B (as usual)
-GRAMMY FAMILY: this beat is totally different than the rest so it soudns good to my ear, but I personally never like Kanye West, rhymes are too commercial(hence the title "Grammy Family), but this guy Consequence rips it though.
-PROBLEM: one of the tightest beats on this record. Beanie featuring Jadakiss, both of them sound like they;re trying to outrap each other, which is always good. One of my favorite tracks, weird that it aint even from the South.
-HOLLA AT ME: I never did like this song, and I hate it more now than ever. too many club bangers. where are all the street songs?
-ADDICTED: W-H-A-C-K!!!!!!!!! (in every way)
-WATCH OUT NOW: by the time I get to this song, I get kinda tired of Cool & Dre's sythesized sound. this song is average.
-DESTROY YOU: Finally, rappers sounding real tight... Tweista & Kraysie Bone both putting effort into they rhymes. TIGHT!!!
-NEVER BE LIKE ME: I'm a huge fan of Lil Scrappy & everybody else from BME CLick, but this song is soooooo whack!!! tyhe beat is just plain bad. Dissapointment.
-CANDYPAINT: My homegirl Trina w/ Slim Thug & Chammilonaire all sound tight over a beat you can really ride out to.
-MIA: beat is average (club banger) & even though I hate Lil Wayne, I think that even a person who loves him will agree that he both sucks and blows on the hook.
-WHERE YOU AT?: Freeway sounds too hype on this song, thge beat is tight and sounds perfect with the Clipse over it. Freeway yells too much, but other than that, it's good.
-STILL FLY: Baby improved the way he raps, he actually stays on beat and makes his lyrics rhyme on this song... pretty good.
-DIP SLIDE, RIDE OUT: slow pimp beat...
-MOvement: Dre (from Cool & Dre) needs to stick to producing cuz he's whack as hell. Plus, the beat ain;t all that neither.
-FUTURE OF DADE COUNTY: I rteally like this, people I ain;t heard of before, totally different sound than the rest of the CD.
Overall, I think Rick Ross should be fired and Dre shouldn't be allowed to rap. As far as DJ Khaled himself, he only produced like 2 or 3 tracks on here, and he OVER-represents Miami Dade County but sounds like he's from New York or something. Trick & Trina still got love here, but Rick Ross & pitbull just coming up based on other peopel's fame. The CD as a whole is worth listening to, but it isn;t something you'll listen to for very long because a lot of these songs sound alike.
