(1 Customer Review)
On its fifth full-length album, PUZZLES LIKE YOU, Mojave 3 extends its stay in the expansive, wide-screen territory of its predecessor, SPOON AND RAFTER. While the British group's alt-country leanings are still evident (see the sleepy, pastoral "Most Days"), singer-songwriter Neil Halstead and company are also intent on crafting lush indie-pop tunes, most notably the chiming single "Breaking the Ice," a gloriously upbeat song that highlights Halstead's gentle vocal harmonies with bassist Rachel Goswell. And, on "Big Star Baby," Mojave 3 masterfully melds a twangy pedal-steel lilt with a highly melodic sensibility, while toasting the the revered power-pop act Big Star. For fans that thought that the former Slowdivers had hit a peak with SPOON AND RAFTER, this assured and dynamic outing reveals that Mojave 3 is still ascending to new and greater heights.
Mojave 3: Neil Halstead (vocals, guitar); Alan Forrester (vocals, keyboards); Rachel Goswell (vocals, bass guitar); Ian McCutcheon (drums, percussion).
Spin (p.84) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[It bears] the mark of Big Star, the Memphis power-pop institution whose twangy jangle-rock lessons Halstead appears to have internalized." CMJ (p.5) - "[T]he album consists mostly of melodic, country-tinged indie rock." No Depression (p.111) - "Stuffed with bubblegum choruses, faster time signatures, and several of the most unapologetically catchy, pure pop tracks they've ever committed to tape." "You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. He's accompanied sparsely by Willie Dixon, drummer ...
| | Mojave 3 Spoon And Rafter CD (2003)
Puzzles Like You CD music
$15.15 Who expected a big stylistic turnabout? Probably nobody. Is there a big stylistic turnabout? Of course not. Album number four, Spoon and Rafter, is merely another worthy addition to the discography of Mojave 3, whose Neil Halstead is steadily building a swelling stockpile of charming, bittersweet, easygoing songs that warrant almost all of the comparisons -- to icons of '60s British folk and American country-rock alike -- that have been drawn throughout the years. Not to beat a dead horse or anything, but bassist Rachel Goswell plays her most reduced role to date, chiming in, as always, with invaluable background vocals, yet she contributes no lead turns this time -- not even one. This one irritating issue does contradict the fact that the album feels more like a natural and collaborative effort than the others. Perhaps ...
