(1 Customer Review)
On its fifth full-length album, PUZZLES LIKE YOU, Mojave 3 extends its stay in the expansive, wide-screen territory of its predecessor, SPOON AND RAFTER. While the British group's alt-country leanings are still evident (see the sleepy, pastoral ... Full Description"Most Days"), singer-songwriter Neil Halstead and company are also intent on crafting lush indie-pop tunes, most notably the chiming single "Breaking the Ice," a gloriously upbeat song that highlights Halstead's gentle vocal harmonies with bassist Rachel Goswell. And, on "Big Star Baby," Mojave 3 masterfully melds a twangy pedal-steel lilt with a highly melodic sensibility, while toasting the the revered power-pop act Big Star. For fans that thought that the former Slowdivers had hit a peak with SPOON AND RAFTER, this assured and dynamic outing reveals that Mojave 3 is still ascending to new and greater heights.Spin (p.84) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[It bears] the mark of Big Star, the Memphis power-pop institution whose twangy jangle-rock lessons Halstead appears to have internalized." CMJ (p.5) - "[T]he album consists mostly of melodic, country-tinged indie rock." No Depression (p.111) - "Stuffed with bubblegum choruses, faster time signatures, and several of the most unapologetically catchy, pure pop tracks they've ever committed to tape." Puzzles Like You album
$8.55 Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24-karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box.
"You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. He's accompanied sparsely by Willie Dixon, drummer Clifton James and a young Buddy Guy, who provide a stark, deliberate ...

Puzzles Like You music CDs
$11.35 Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' year-end lists, and it's no wonder--the songs on FUNERAL ...
| | Low Great Destroyer CD (2005)
Puzzles Like You songs
$11.69 Low's seventh full-length album, THE GREAT DESTROYER, marks a literal departure for the Duluth, Minnesota trio, with the band leaving its longtime label, Kranky, in favor of uber-indie taste-makers, Sub Pop. The overall sound of the record reflects the transition, as Low hits new heights in both volume and aggression, particularly on the fuzzed-out "Monkey" and the swelling "Everybody's ...

Puzzles Like You album
$14.45 Since 1996's BEAUTIFUL FREAK, Mark Oliver Everett used his band, Eels, as a mouthpiece for his inspirationally morose worldview. Recorded over a period of seven years in Everett's basement, the 33 tracks of 2005's BLINKING LIGHTS AND OTHER REVELATIONS see the singer/songwriter backing off from the rockier sounds of 2003's SHOOTENANNY! to meditate on the significance of family, aging, and death. The results are often breathtaking, a warm blanket of a song cycle whose tracks are the more mature, resolute ...

Puzzles Like You songs
$15.19 Every once in a while a band emerges from the crowded New York music scene that has all the elements to set them apart from their peers. MJ12 is just such a band. They combine sharp, edgy songwriting, passionate vocals and air-tight musicianship in their unique brand of acoustic/electric rock. The group has been turning heads of fans and industry alike since their first appearance on the scene in 1995. The group was co-founded earlier that year by principle songwriters Steve Messina and Dave Diamond. Their debut cd, the lush and atmospheric, "The Secret Life of Ester Stevens" sold over 3,000 copies in the first six months. Since then there has been no looking back for MJ12 as they have continued to amass an impressive and ever expanding list of accomplishments.Their second album, "Pink", was released in 1997 and focuses on the darker side of life in the big city. Striking a chord with local fans, this helped elevate MJ12 to New York City's most talked about live performers. That same year the song "Cut You Loose" was hand picked for the soundtrack for the independent ...
